This is Tiffany, gender uncertain. My son took the train to Los
Angeles with his Boy Scout troop and came home with a new friend. His
leader warned us of this new development by texting my husband a photo
of my son with his new friend and the comment "congratulations on your
new grandchild".
It's not legal to sell aquatic
turtles less than 6" shell diameter, but this little one was only 1".
True to his typical self, my son never asked how large his new friend
would grow. Tiffany is now 4" and will top out at 10-12". When fully
grown, s/he will need a 100 gallon aquarium. We have no idea where we
will put that in our house.

Tiffany is very cute, and thankfully in a home that cares!
I went on a field trip once and came home with a hermit crab. He was a far cry from the dog I'd always asked for, but we were at the boardwalk and I had $2, so the price was right. It is of note that hermit crabs sold at the boardwalk are not really pets so much as pointy living ornaments, and we didn't really have internet the way we do now, so the appropriate stewardship of such a creature never really came into my purview.
Hi, Tiffany! I like how your family knows they will get that tank, they just don't know where to put it yet. Maybe son will grow up and have a house of his own by then.

Tiffany is adorable! I understand about what to do when he/she is full grown however. I love turtles. We have lots of lakes around us so I'm stopping at least once a drive to save a turtle who is trying to cross the road.
Time to install that backyard lily pond you’ve always wanted! Tiffany’s going to need someplace to sunbathe and contemplate life. S/he’s a very fetching grandchild.

I had red-eared sliders (which is what Tiffany appears to be). They were great pets.
Tiffany is probably female (from what I can see). Females tend to have shorter front claws than males. There are other, more "personal" ways to sex a turtle, but if you're not planning to breed them, it doesn't matter too much what sex they are.

Hi Tiffany. You can stop worrying about your size, If you are really an Southwestern Pond Turtle, you will take years to grow up. Your kind live up to fifty years in the wild. That means your grandma will be a rich and famous writer by then. They can build a house around your 100 gallon tank and maybe share a beach or two with you.
Turtles . . . something so wonderfully special about those too.
