Caption Contest results

Yesterday's caption contest provided some welcome comic relief to the week. Is anyone else just slogging along right now? I can't quite seem to find my joie de vivre these days, so your hilarious comments were very welcome.

Herewith the entirely subjective, and totally un-scientific results.

First, noted for his absence: Colin Smith.
Ok, so, I missed it. Honestly, I need supervision these days. This is what happens when you post things 20 minutes after you write them. I need to take my own best advice: let something sit for a while. Argh. (Sorry Colin!)

Steve Forti dared to go there!
Say "fiction novel" one more time. I dare you.
as did CynthiaMc
You didn't read all the queries on Query Shark.

Jennifer R. Donohue is exactly on target
I was told there'd be ham.

PAH  is both subtle and hilarious
Resting Bitch Face.

These all made me laugh out loud

Melanie Sue Bowles
That moment when your song comes on, but you're too cold to dance...

kdjames.com
You're making this whole "Man's Best Friend" thing harder than it needs to be.

As did Patricia L. Shelton , but somewhat with an ewww mixed in as well
Cover your mouth. Please.

Unfortunately for Theresa, the caption Celebrity Guest Judge was not Her Grace
All right, where's the Duchess of Yowl?
otherwise this would have been a sure fire winner!

In a Forti-esque tour de force Kitty!
Speaking of the Canon… Yeah, I lifted my leg on it. I’m a dog. What would you have done? In my defense, She said no before but now said yes “in a Twitter pitch fest.” So I asked her, “Where’s this twitter thing? I can pee anywhere.” I don’t think she heard me because she said, “When your life goes off the rails, try Twitter pitching. C’mon, let’s go home. I’ve got Some housekeeping to do. Plus, it’s time for a Caption contest!”

and in a stunning reminder of The World is Weird, this entry from Sam Hawke
If you brush the snow off right now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you and I will kill you.

was posted just about the time I was watching - for the first time mind you - the movie from which this is quoted. What are the chances?!

Hands down, not even close, the winner is Mallory Love
When you wake up and realize the 100th flash fiction contest isn't posted yet. ; )
Mallory Love if you'll email me with your mailing address and what you like to read, we'll fix you up with a prize!

Thanks to all of you who contributed captions and hilarity to this rather rainy dreary weekend.  And to Susan Pogorzelski for lending us all her wonderful Riley for the photo.

Oh, YAY! I love learning whose precious pet is the subject of a "caption contest." And learning the precious pet's name.

Susan, Your Riley is darling. Gotta love a tri-colored pup.

Also, what fun to get a mention. Thanks Janet. I hope the gloomies go away. Now where is Colin?

Melanie Sue Bowles said...

Oops... I was so excited to learn this was Susan's pup, I forgot to say: Congratulations, Mallory!

Ummm ... kinda reminiscent of the dancing gorilla/bear awareness test that I'm sure everyone is familiar with ... Colin was right smack in the middle of things:

"I could tell you how much I hate snow balls in 100 words... or I could just bite your leg off. You choose."

He just didn't enter multiple times

Great reading yesterday.

So...where's Waldo, I mean Colin. Maybe he's kayaking, like Noah, on a flooded Main St. Jeez, I say it in jest but I hope not.

Um, has the color changed round these parts or have my allergies really messed up blood-shot eyes.

Susan said...

Hooray! That's my boy! Thanks for including him on your blog, Janet. Yesterday was plain rough, so to see his familiar mug and read all the ensuing captions made for some hard-won chuckles.

I loved them all (congrats, Mallory!), but Mister Furkles wins in my book for accuracy: "Screw snow; I'm pooping in the dining room."

Yep. That's happened.

Thanks for the puppy love! <3

Waldo/Colin 9:49. Found him.

Oh, and congrats to Mallory. Nicely handled.

With the water receding 'round these parts, there are smiles all around. Plus, I just finished a great read at 3:30 this morning (member of the canon, no less!). I'm on an editing high today. I've got endorphins to spare, just hit me up if you need a charge.

Congrats, Mallory! I gulped when I realized it was Friday, too.

PAH - that was hilarious.

"Where in the World is Colin Smith?" has a ring to it...

Claire Bobrow said...

Congrats to all the mentions, and to our winner - Mallory! Your entry reminded me of that scene from The Princess Bride when Buttercup steps forth from the castle and the old woman in the crowd yells "Boo!" Except in this case, I was the woman and I yelled "Whew!" I'm more than slightly terrified of the imminent 100th contest!!

And I did notice Colin's entry yesterday, so today's post had me scratching my head for a moment...

Claire Bobrow said...

Oh, and Susan - Riley is adorable! Love that expressive face!

Kitty said...

That was really fun! Thanks for the mention. And congrats Mallory Love!

Donnaeve said...

Congrats Mallory!

Some of these made me snort laugh!

What a cutie Riley is, Susan! He has such an expressive face.

Speaking of the canon, I found The Secret of Chimneys on my library's digital site, so I'm reading the e-book now. I thought I'd read ALL of Agatha Christie's books but for some reason I don't remember this one.

Congrats Mallory!

And Susan, your Riley looks like a sweetheart, despite that look on his face =)

Congratulations, Mallory!

(I laughed out loud at Resting Bitch Face.)

Congratulations, Mallory, and don’t fret. I have a feeling the 100th will arrive soonish.

Colin, that’s what happens when you type in invisible ink.

BJ Muntain, Sherry Howard and Claire Bobrow,
After our discussing the benefits of reading poetry I noticed one of Goodreads’ Giveaways yesterday was a book of poetry called “In Darwin’s Room” by Debora Gregor (her tenth volume of poems). I told them I wanted a copy and they said okay. So I’ll have my book of poems to read soon. And I’ll still keep an eye out for the “Children’s Anthology of Poetry.”

Where did I go? I thought I posted an entry? Is this Janet's subtle way of telling me I have been banished to Carkoon again?!

I have been less present this week because I was out of town Tues-Thurs, which was probably just as well given the 100-word clamp down. Helped keep my head under the radar... ;)

It's nice to know my less-than-usual presence was so obvious I was thought to be absent. Who doesn't like to think they're missed? :)

Fun contest. Thanks, Janet!

Janet Reid said...

Honest to godiva, I need a keeper.
Or more coffee.
(or both)

Carolynnwith2Ns said...

Dear Queen, do not fret, you were not in error.

It was a test.
Some of us failed and then again some of us failed. Woe is the way of us writers.

Joseph S. said...

Seriously now, Colin, How did you post your entry up so high after the deadline passed?

Colin Smith said...

Think nothing of it, Janet. Clearly my entry was so exceptional, it was too good to be true. ;) Or maybe it was so good, you thought someone else wrote it...?

Mallory Love said...

Thanks Janet! I love all your contests, sound advice, and recommendations ( watched Margin Call last night and loved it). Looking forward to your next challenge for us writers (obviously).

Susan, your dog is adorable, even with resting bitch face...lol. : )

Mallory Love said...

This image had made cracking up. I had the look up the scene again on YouTube which led me to rewatching the whole movie. Thanks Claire!

Susan said...

Thanks everyone! Riley is an absolute sweetheart, despite that expressive glare. He's just become quite the grump in his old age (he just turned 11 in April!). Here's a pic of how he feels about that: Riley

And here's a pic of his little sister, Moxie, staring at me with rapt attention as I read Harry Potter: Harry gave Dobby a sock?!

These two are the loves of my life. Happy to be able to share them with all of you. Thanks again, Janet.

Claire Bobrow said...

Glad to be of service, Mallory! And hopefully you didn't mind spending part of your Sunday watching it again :-) Another funny caption for the photo of Riley could have been: "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."

Lisa Bodenheim said...

Awww, great pics of Riley, Susan. Thank you for sharing him.

Congrats Mallory! And great caption reads last night when I got home, not to mention this afternoon after Janet's line-out.

BJ Muntain said...

Congrats, Mallory!

Joseph: Nice! That was almost as good timing as Sam Hawke's entry. :)

Janet: More coffee is always on the agenda. And never unwelcome.

Susan: Riley is a sweetheart. As is Moxie. :)

Happy to have provided a moment of levity. :)

Many of these made me laugh, but Mallory's is what all of us were no doubt thinking, but determined not to say. Congratulations, well done!

Susan, your Riley has such gorgeous colouring. But those Eyebrows of Judgment are remarkable! I don't think I've ever seen that expression on a dog's face. Every time I look at that pic, I smile. Thanks for sharing him (and Moxie) with us.

Beth Carpenter said...

Wonderful dogs, Susan. Your pictures made me smile.

KDJames, "eyebrows of judgement". I love that!

Jennifer R. Donohue said...

Congratulations Mallory!

Susan P, your pup is adorable! I want to lovingly smoosh Riley's face ^^

When Elka was a puppy, our housemate at the time would try to call her by saying "Elka, come here! I have ham in my pockets!" and I would scold him for lying to the dog (and actually, he once DID have ham, that he was actively handing to Elka right as I got home from work. The ham was practically in her mouth and she ran joyfully to me instead)

CynthiaMc said...

Congrats, Mallory!

Susan, your pups are adorable.

A bit late checking back in, but I wanted to say congratulations to Mallory. All the entries made me smile, but I have to admit a reference to a Liam Neeson movie kinda gets my vote every time :)

AJ Blythe said...

Congrats to everyone who got a shout-out, especially Mallory who voiced what we were all thinking.

Echoing everyone on the gorgeousness that is Riley.

I have to confess, I truly appreciated the chuckles I had reading the posts. Thanks all.

RosannaM said...

Susan, Riley has the best eyeliner ever! Glad these gave you some needed smiles.

Mallory--Congrats. QOTKU is sure showing not telling us how to amp up the old tension. Next thing you know (like tomorrow) she'll ease the pace, let us catch our breath, before ratcheting it up all over again!

Janet--thanks for the permission slip. I was doing some life this weekend.

Susan said...

Thanks again, everyone! Riley appreciates all the love today--and the extra treats he received for being such a good sport.

Jennifer: He has a smooshable face. ;)

Kd: Ha! "Eyebrows of Judgment" indeed! I'd pay top-dollar to know what he's really thinking ;)

Rosanna: His name was Rocky when I first adopted him at ten months old. My mom took to calling him Rocky Raccoon because of the black around his eyes. It was his spirit that endeared me to him when I first saw him, but I'm a goner when he looks at me with those eyes.

Sam Hawke said...

Clearly I have some kind of creepy insight window into what the QOTKU is doing at any particular moment. Who wants to rent me out to see her reaction when she's reading your query? ;)

Congrats Mallory and thanks for the giggles everyone.
