My perplexity about someone mailing query without an SASE overlooked the obvious: it was a mistake; the writer intended to include one.
Since I like to make mistakes at least once a day, just to make sure I don't lose my knack for doing so, may I suggest this:
If you're querying by mail, put Enc: SASE under your sig line. That way, if you forget, I know you've forgotten. Same with sample pages. Enc: 5 pages of deathless prose. Same with $20 bills. Ah the stuff that dreams are made of! (Can you tell I just read The Maltese Falcon?)

And was it as good as you hoped for? I've seen the movie, but haven't gotten to the book yet either.

Enc: Five pages of Wizard's Walk, one dozen rum balls, one pound of bourbon fudge and one box of scotched pecans from our local confectionary, Liquor is Quicker.
It's always best to follow instructions.
I know some writers who don't do the SASE. They figure if the agent wants the book, they'll call.
I'm not sure this is the way to go but it sure would save postage.
I like Julie's idea of the liquor. You may still be rejecting but you'd remember us with a smile.
