"This really is a novel for both head and heart"

A beautifully written review of Q by Fleur Fisher.

This blog post is a sterling example of what writers should do on their blogs. (NOT write about querying or rejections!) In fact, her whole blog makes me wish she was a writer.  I ♥ it a lot. Also, alot

212-GIM-MEEE!

Riiiiing!
Riiiing!

Me (reaching for cell phone hidden under octopus): Whut?

Chipper voice: This is Inge VonPeepenskeeven, formerly of the Slitherina Literary Agency and Gin Appreciation Society! Happy DAY ONE Day!

Me: huh, whut???

Inge: (quite chipper, clearly too happy to last long in publishing) Today is the launch date for Bill Cameron's DAY ONE! We're calling to make sure you have your copy?

Me: WHUT????

Inge: Please, Miss Reid, have you bought a copy of DAY ONE yet?

Me: Buy? BUY? I have YET to forgive Bill Cameron for What He Did to Eager™.! BUY A COPY? He'll be lucky if I ever tweet to him again, that rapscallion reprobate! (sounds of snarling and octopus scuttling under desk)

Inge: Miss Reid? Miss Reid?

Me: WHAT!

Inge: Mr. Cameron sent cupcakes to your office. Miss Townsend and Miss Barnes are poised like raptors with forks and serviettes. Miss Evans, in fact BOTH Miss Evans, are swinging from the chandelier by their knees holding tongs!

Me: All is forgiven! I'll be RIGHT there! Hold them off Inge! Hold them OFF!

Inge: Where oh where did I put my application for the convent?

A solid adrenaline rush from start to finish!

Library Journal highlights Andrew Grant in a roundup of summer men's fiction.

David Trevellyan returns shortly after the events that ended Grant's debut novel, EVEN. Exiled from New York and at loose ends, Trevellyan comes to the aid of a legendary member of the British Royal Navy Intelligence Service trying to recover a canister of lethal gas.

Grant's first-person narration puts the reader in the front seat of heart-pounding action scenes with a hard man who has no compunction about killing. The tension is relieved by Trevellyan's wry, understated sense of humor but never long enough to make the story lose momentum.

VERDICT: A solid adrenaline rush from start to finish.

Robin Becker's BRAINS

Robin Becker's debut novel BRAINS is coming out in May, so of course we got galleys recently.

When I slithered over to Robin's blog, she'd posted about getting hers. Robin just cracks me up.

(click on her link before reading further)

Robin's Galley has a twin sister here in New York:

The Herpet-American assssistant
gave Galley a welcome to FinePrint squeeeeze!

Galley immediately wanted to visit the BestSeller shelf!

Poor Galley! She wasn't used to the high life. We found her flopped over, pages askew, clutching a bottle, whispering "I love my editor." We cleaned her up, and put her with some of the other Galleys so she'd have company, and friends.

Slush works

In August 2007 I got a cool query and a couple of sizzling first pages. I requested a partial, read it and loved it. I requested the full and LOVED it. I offered. He accepted.

I sent it out to a bunch of editors who also loved it.
I sold it.

Two years later (almost to the day that book was delivered to the editor) THE BREACH by Patrick Lee is on the NYT Bestseller extended list at #29, and hanging out on the USA Today list at #124.

Slush works.

Patrick Lee and The Breach are living, breathing, bestselling proof of that.

A Different Shade of Blue gets some TV attention!

Adam Eisenberg's terrific book A DIFFERENT SHADE OF BLUE gets some face time with KING-TV in Seattle.

The book is a narrative look at what it's like to be a female cop: told on the record, in their own names by female cops past and present. Seattle was one of the first cities to have female cops, but until the 70's the women were in their own department. The book chronicles what those "separate" years were like and what it was like during the time when women were first allowed to be beat cops, and test with the men for promotion.

The Doctor Will See Crack You Up Now!

I've been a huge fan of Lucy Hornstein's blog for a long time. How can you NOT love someone who has a law: "There is no cure for Stupid."

Now, you can read her hilarious series of essays about medicine and the human body (I swear, she makes the digestive tract fascinating!) that will leave you thinking "yes, we need more docs just like Dr. Dinosaur"

Hot Reads picks A Different Shade of Blue

Hot Reads in the OC Metro magazine picked Adam Eisenberg's A DIFFERENT SHADE OF BLUE for their recent Hot Reads choice!

In 1961 a landmark civil rights suit allowed women to pursue law enforcement careers on equal footing with men.

The arrival of women changed policing but it didn't much change police ethos. Being a cop still means being part of a culture that is masculine, military-minded, and macho. That's a tough place to be when you aren't masculine.

What's it really like to be a female cop? Stripped of the television stereotypes, and political correctness whitewashing, A DIFFERENT SHADE OF BLUE is the on-the-record, in their own names, accounting from three generations of female officers. Black, white; lesbian, straight; feminist, not; married, single. The only thing they have in common is gender, badge and gun.
