It's almost August, where do you want to be?

It's 93 degrees here in NYC today.
The only saving grace is the humidity is half that.

I'm tucked into my office, reading.

Here's where I wish I was reading!

Of course, that's the Proud Spirit Horse Sanctuary.

What sounds cool and inviting to you these days, as we get ready for the doldrums of August?

This weekend's flash fiction contest is going to have prompt words from last week's entries. I'm pretty sure timpani will be one of them.

If I don't flop down somewhere quiet and do some doodling on current WIPs, I'm going to be a total flopdoodle all day for sure!

Only 93* in NYC? It was 98* on our porch ... in the shade, and I have the picture to prove it. The humidity gets me long before the temperature ever does. Anything above 30% and I begin to melt. The only saving grace was the wind. Come night fall and the wind died but the heat & oppressive humidity took over. All. Night. Long. And we don't have AC. People say, why don't you get an air conditioner? They're not that expensive. I say it's not the cost of the AC unit but the cost of running it that is too much for our budget. I'd like to be in a cool, dry, breezy place, wherever that may be.

The only outside thing I did yesterday was dragging the trash barrels to the curb, and that was an unacceptable amount to time to be out in that insanity.

I am counting the days until spending all next week at a private lake cabin. Detach from reality for a bit. Relax, cool off, and if the kids don't drive me to madness, enjoy a good book or two. Maybe from a hammock. At least with my toes in the water.

Yesterday, it was well over 90 again so I was in one of the flowerbeds at 6am trying to remove a Yucca that decided a ten foot root system would ensure its survival. After 20 minutes with an ax, it learned it was wrong. By 10am, the heat had finally gotten the better of me.

I have a porch very similar to Melanie's, though I don't have the overhead fans. We don't need them. Up on the hill, the wind is relentless. Only problem with that is, when the wind is hot, it doesn't help at all.

Where would I like to be? In a couple weeks, we'll be in Caseville on beautiful Lake Huron's shoreline, watching the sunset and sipping wine. And one day, we hope, we'll be retiring there as well. I don't want to be on the water, I want to be 'on' the water. :)

I, too, would like to be on a porch with a pushmi-pullyu goat (I didn't know they existed!).

Aww...! The Proud Spirit goats. And Petey the 80 pound pitty. Mama goat, the one closest to Petey, is named Matilda. Banjo is the fawn colored boy, and then little Winny behind him. In case anyone doesn't know - goats are hilarious.

Blue Sage, HA!

Well, here our nights are at freezing and our days around 50'F (13'C), so I am rather jealous of your balmy days. I'm as ready for the days to heat as your are for them to cool.

That looks like an awesome deck to write on. Any pages that need to be scratched could be fed to the goats (they eat anything, right).

Melanie, the angle of that photo does make it look like you have a push-me-pull-me goat though!

Autumn!

OK, Melanie's place, specifically that porch, is officially on my bucket list.

And I love the word timpani!

Cucumber water! I’ve got an overachieving cucumber plant in my garden, so I sliced a couple and dropped them in a gallon of spring water with some frozen strawberry slices. A few days later I had refreshing flavored water (that, by the way, goes very well with gin). A tall glass of that on my new screened porch with the fan whirling away and I’m set.

Also, there’s nothing better than a tomato sandwich at this time of year, but alas I don’t have any ripe tomatoes yet.

Banjo and Winnie...it took a serious second and third look before I realized that I was not looking at a 2-headed goat.

I need a beach, a cool breeze, and a book. I am grateful the library is offering lobby pick-up of reading material. I don't think I'm getting the other two wishes granted any time soon.

oh the beach, I yearn for the beach. Maybe next year...

Proud Spirit! I love the porch and the porch dwellers :-)

Typical summers in San Francisco are cool and foggy. It used to bother me when I first arrived, but now it feels refreshing. Especially at night. But I wouldn't mind a trip to the warm and inviting North Carolina coast right about now...

I sure wish I was at Proud Spirit too.

It’s a mild 108 here, but still. That porch and all the green would sure be loverly. Indeed, I’d not budge until spring.

Anywho, hope everyone is staying safe.

There’s a supposedly haunted house for sale in Kalamazoo that I’ve had my eye on. I’d love to go check it out. We’re not quite ready to move yet or I’d seriously consider it. Wouldn’t that be something for the author bio!

Ooooh! Luralee! I almost moved to K'zoo when I was still young and adventurous. But I'd just met my now husband and decided to stick it out in the Livonia area. I'm glad I made the choice I did, but I do love K'zoo. You should take the chance!

A weather statement was issued a couple of days ago, warning us of the Great Heat that was about to arrive - yes, for the first time this year it's hotter than 25C (77F). Right now (9 am) it's only 19C (66F) here in my south-facing apartment, so I'm a bit too cool, but I have all the doors and windows open for the cool air to come in before the sun climbs too high. By mid-afternoon it will be very warm indeed. I might have to put the butter in the fridge.

As for balmy locations, last week I took a little trip (yes, we're allowed to) to see my sister at her lakeside home about 250 miles away. The temperature got into the 90s, but there's always a breeze at the lake (freshening into a gale in the late afternoon). Sitting on her deck with my morning coffee, watching the water just feet away; that is really nice.

High of 80 here upstate -- perfect outdoor day. Tough to chain yourself to a cpu but I'm going to try. In sight of the end of my WIP but can't quite seem to finish it.

Hmmm. How does one split timpani into other words?? I guess it's my own damn fault ;)

Central Florida, the place where people groan when summer rolls around. It is in the mid 90s for temperature. If the humidity hasn't caught up to it yet, it will, but summer storms are our natural air conditioning.

We have the pool, surrounded by orchids, surrounded by screen to keep the bugs out. Next week the storms might come in the mornings and allow us to use it in the afternoon.

It still has never broken the 100 degree temp here, so I'll stick, though would love to one day see Proud Spirit and visit Melanie, though I know she will put me to work.

That looks like a two-headed goat and I DO NOT like it. No sir, no ma'am.

It's funny--"where do you want to be" has been the top question on my mind for the last few weeks. I have been quarantining in Georgia since March, and I can't decide when I should go back up to NYC. It's impossible to know where the best place is right now.

Nightsmusic, It’ll probably be another year or two at least before were ready, but Kalamazoo is high on the list. But I also am feeling the pull of lakeshore living so I need to add South Haven and St Jo as places I’d like to be.

nightsmusic said...

Luralee, I completely understand. We've vacationed in Caseville since before time. As many times as I've seen the ocean, I'd rather be on a Great Lake than anywhere else. I have a friend who lived in Grand Haven for a few years, though not on the lake. They loved it there. Just a suggestion. And we too have a few years to wait before we can do anything. So the week in September will have to do for now.

Thanks for the reminder that I’ve already got what I want. My deck is the perfect reading room.

Obviously, writers' party on Melanie's Proud Spirit porch is the place to be. I can't complain. Our high is a balmy 72, with humidity at 55%. I have a tiny sitting porch, but not nearly as inviting as meanies. No goats, for one thing.

Panda in Chief said...

Uh...that was supposed to be Melanie's. Curse you, Otto Correct!

KDJames said...

Not necessarily to do with the outdoor weather (we just set a miserable new record for consecutive number of days 90*F or higher-- 26, I think? 27?), although the place I most want to be today might be considered cool and inviting. I'd love to be in my daughter's hospital room, where she's recovering from giving birth to my new granddaughter last night. I'm in serious need of some grandbaby snuggles. But COVID rules don't allow visitors, so I'll have to be patient.

Melanie, I love your porch. One day . . . hopefully not a day when you need help hauling bales. :)

You all try to stay cool, wherever you end up spending time in August.

Blue Sage, you must have read the same childhood stories as I did. I have to wonder if the goats posed that way on purpose. I wouldn't put it past them.

NLiu said...

It's hot here too. And I want mountains: cool, breezy mountains with maybe a little snow sprinkled on top.

The delightful goat-scattered porch would also do ;)

At the moment I'm in the Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue/Barfleur area where the weather is a steady 23°C (75°F) instead of Paris where Friday it's suppose to get up to 39°C (102°F.) No thank you, we'll remain seaside until the temperature drops back down to a reasonable 25°C (77°F) but I wouldn't mind being on Melanie's lovely porch. What a wonderful place to read.
