holy shinola!

Australia update:

We're home from holidays. Out of interest, here's a comparison of the view we came home to compared to the photo you posted on the blog recently. The smoke is thick and nasty and the colour makes it really eery. Canberra has been smoky for 4 or 5 weeks (although only this bad more recently). Everything smells like smoke - even the air inside the house is hazy from it. At least we aren't burning!!

I'm so sorry. This is devastating on so many levels and I'm glad you're okay. Hoping you stay that way. I have no other words...

The scope of these fires is so difficult to comprehend. Praying for these to be brought under control soon. Stay safe.

I'm so sorry. We had wildfires and smoke this past summer, but the color never got quite that bad. Hoping for rain soon.

Such a contrast, but I'm glad to know you're safe, albeit the air quality looks terrible.

It's terrible! I'm so sorry for you and the entire country (I have many friends there). Be safe.

Wow, that is something. We are seeing all kinds of things on the news but this really does bring it home. Glad you are OK, AJ.

Horrible, horrible, horrible! And no rain in sight, I believe. Just seen that 'group'-email off this blog, AJ, in which you have provided more details.

It is absolutely devastating!

I don't know how you -ANYONE- can still breathe... I remember the smoke coming over from wild fires back in Canada (we were living in Calgary/Alberta and it was burning in British Columbia), and we had smokey air in the flat as well. It was permanently scratching my throat.

BUT: the smoke 'only' hung like a thick carpet in the sky, not dense and low like yours!!!! Plus, it was only every now and then.
It must be absolutely awful what you're currently going through.

I hope hope hope that rain is coming soon! And less wind.

Thanks, everyone. As I said, we're not burning, so living with smoke is nothing compared to what many have and are going through.

But if anyone knows a good rain dance...

Whoa, AJ, I hope you went home to put together a "go" bag. Please to ready to go immediately if they tell you to.

If there is a hardware store nearby get a few boxes of dust or particulate masks.

Stay safe my dear.

As far as rain songs, this one is supposedly based on the Cree and Kaw Indian chant from the American Southwest: witchi tao to

I can't imagine how scary this is, and with no end in sight. I wish we could send you some of our snow!

I missed this post yesterday, but hoping you can stay safe, AJ! Those apocalyptic skies are no fun; we've had our share of them in California too.
