I hope everyone has a fun and safe day. With a deadline looming and with dreary weather, it's a writing day for me.

My dad and his twin sister were born on the 4th of July. Daddy always said "These fireworks are mine, but I'll share them with you."

To borrow from what I posted earlier on the Wall Street Journal website - I've lived in the Deep South, the psuedo South, New York, Alaska, Colorado, and Maine. I've been to 49 of the 50 states. Hawaii is ruining my perfect record. I've lived in Europe and Asia. I've found something to love in each of these places.

I am grateful, especially as a woman, to be an American. There is nowhere else on Earth like it and nowhere else I'd rather be.

Happy Independence Day, Everyone!

I forgot Canada. Lived there too :)

Enjoy your BBQs, everyone. Or, if you're like me and don't have a backyard handy, put a little BBQ sauce on some chicken wings and call it independence. And enjoy the fireworks! Oddly enough, the fireworks up here in the Bronx make a lot of noise, but somehow find themselves unattached to the customary visual displays... Hm... Makes me wonder what kind of fireworks those are, exactly.

Hello all. I’m doing revisions on a manuscript for Janet and there’s some room in the chum bucket if you care to join me. I’ll need betas at the end of this month. In moments of weakness Miss Julie and John Davis Frain have agreed to read. Anyone else?

You thought I forgot, didn’t you John?

LOL CynthiaMc, we are the forgotten country :) Happy holiday to all our southern neighbours!

Cynthia—that’s funny. My parents always used to say the fireworks were for me. Best birthday gift ever, right?

Brenda— I’m always happy to lend an eye when needed. Feel free to get in touch anytime. Same goes for anyone else in the Reef.

Thanks Megan. I’ll message you.

Jan-my apologies- we lived in Gold River on Vancouver Island - great place to be a kid. The town was only 2 years old, nothing else for miles.

We Australians don't celebrate 4th July of course, but my Oklahoman father quietly hat-tips it every year with a hot dog for dinner. Usually I join him (I think he misses America sometimes), but I just had a wisdom tooth out. So I swapped out this year's hot dog for mashing up mac 'n cheese with the side of my tongue. The spirit was there.

Happy Independence Day,

Happy belated Canada Day

Happy Christian Feast Day to the eight sects that celebrate it.

Happy first day of Dree,

Happy Republic Day,

Happy Liberation Day,

Happy Birthday Queen Sonya of Norway,

and Happy sidewalk egg frying day.

I hope I didn't leave anyone out

Got the smoker running, then went fishing. Having some neighbors over for ribs and smoked pork. After that I will calm frantic cats and the blind neighbors dog all night. Fireworks was from a previous life as a class B pyrotech.

Have fun folks, but y'all stay safe.

Happy Fourth of July!

My family's weeklong, biannual Outer Banks vacation is winding down. I think we're doing bratwursts and assorted salads for dinner (the local market has a pasta salad with peas and prosciutto that is amazing) and then we're going to bonfire some s'mores on the beach and look North for the fireworks.

Had a family photos slideshow last night, hopefully more of that tonight as well. I saw some pictures I hadn't seen, and heard some stories I hadn't heard (or expansions on facts that I'd known a little bit about).
