Meet Kuda! He’s my occasional pet.
When I have him, he’s not happy that his parents are visiting tropical locations and don’t bother to sneak him in.
Live crickets make him feel better, and make me feel worse when they escape.

He’s been quite the writing inspiration. The main character of ROCK AND ROLL WOODS is named after him. Kuda is very unhappy that the character is a bear, rather than a bearded dragon. His scaly presence always inspires me to write about a real dragon—but that book hasn’t found a home yet.

For the record, I wouldn't like the thought of escaping crickets either. Makes me itchy...
What a handsome fella... and how fun that Kuda the bear is named after him.
Returning after the excitement of knowing the identity of the Fortunate Person Who Gets to Spend Time with Kuda. (I'm pretty terrible at this game, but playing is still fun.) Kuda is one handsome guy. I gotta wonder if he knows it and posed for that shot. Glad I zoomed in on those scales--beautiful and different on different body parts. Very cool!
Of course, Kuda is my visitor while his parents are off in the tropics. My younger son, home with me, has re-fallen in love with this sweet guy. Believe it or not, he’s a real cuddle bug, and will cling to you as you walk all over. He’d rather be with than basking in the sun anyway, I think! He’s easy to get a picture of, not at all camera shy. I think I just posted on Instagram a few days ago how long his tail has gotten. I was so worried that Kamora would get tired of him, but everybody in the family loves Kuda!

I can see why he's a big hit at your house, but I hope the crickets never get loose...yikes!
That cricket story made me laugh-snort. However, I sincerely hope it never happens to you. Kuda does look very inspiring - and like he knows it, posing like that. “See my beard! Hear me roar!” I'll bet he is secretly auditioning for Hamlet when your back is turned.
Pet snakes that escape and are never found are way scarier than crickets. Just saying!

What a fine looking fellow Koda is. He has sensible people supporting him too, keeping him out of Tropical places.
I just live in a subtropic place and there are all kinds of things that would see him as breakfast, though most of them started as pets too.
In just the county I live in we have Tegus, Green Iguanas, Black Iguanas, Nile Monitor Lizards that have developed colonies.
The Pythons and Boas may be colonists, the scientific community is split if they are or just happened to be released pets. The cops try to maintain that they are someone's pet that got loose. The number of them seems to get bigger every year though.
Hello, Kuda! I've read your namesake's book! The 4 yo I gave it to loves to shout the song, "Boom-wappa-wappa!"
The cricket story in the WaPo was so great I had to share it with my husband. Turned out he had his own cricket horror story, though his was when he had to babysit his girlfriend's bearded dragon in college. I always wondered why he refused to let our kids pick out a beardie or anything that ate crickets. Now I know. :>
