Awwww!! Yup, you're going to get a whole lot more "awwws" from me with the cats. Sorry, dog lovers, I'm just not of your clan. But Cricket! What an adorable picture. That face makes him look just like a doddery old Admiral! :D

Awww! With those names, I'd say this cat has personality up the yazoo.

Is it safe to assume that with the Professor Stinkbottom alias, he's banished from the dining room during Christmas feast time?

Cricket looks like he's telling a yarn about the rat and the snake and how he single pawedly vanquished both.

Cricket's nicknames are wonderful. I've never had a pet yet I didn't shower with nicknames (when I had two cats, they were The Brothers Persnootikii, each one individually being a Persnooticus Puss; now I have one cat, one dog, and they are the Poobahs - yellow Poobah and Grey Poobah, boy Poobah and girl Poobah, doggy Poobah and kee-kee Poobah). Of course, Gossamer's greatest sobriquet was given to him by Our Mighty Hostess and Queen.

I see from the curl of his tongue that Cricket is about to yawn and have himself a good nap. May it be a good one. (How amazing are cats, that when they yawn their entire heads split wide open and then suddenly they're these beautiful little furry creatures again when they close their astonishing maws?)

Colin, Penelope would head-bonk you into "aww"ing her.

Looks like my boss just before her day off.

Diane: I don't know... it would be one very special dog that would get that kind of an "awww" out of me. Now, Gossamer--that's one cute kitty. I have a ton of "awwws" for Our Goss (you share him with the blog now, you realize). :)

As for the yawning thing, opossums are similar. I think they look kinda cute until they open their huge mouths and bare those ginormous pointy teeth. Eek!

Oh, I love this... such a great photo. And yes, nicknames. They aren't planned, they just sorta happen. We have nearly 50 horses here at our sanctuary. They all have proper names, of course, AND nicknames. I can't seem to prevent it from happening.

That's my boy. He wavers between gravitas and extreme dorkiness. He's incredibly social, although it took us a couple of years to make him into a lap cat. Alternate nicknames include Monstro the Whale, Babar l'Elephant, l'Hippopotame and anything else relating to his enormous size.

You can see more photos of him here as well as a couple of our other cat, Mouse.

Lisa: That name is the result of one day when he had a long drive to go stay at my sister's and soiled his carrier in several ways. At the house I announced him as Professor Stinkbottom. The nickname stuck but the stink does not.

DLM: He's not about to yawn, that's just the way he relaxes. The mouth opens and the tongue gradually slides out. That's about when the nosewhistle starts up, too.

Hi, Cricket! I would have guessed that you were Colin's but we've already seen his Sam, so I'm stumped. Love the nicknames!

DLM said...

Cheryl, cats who are social and doofy are the BEST.

Colin, you clearly have not seen the most recent post on my blog. I'm just sayin'.

August is reigning cats and dogs.

Good picture of Cricket - posture and mouth especially.

I will try to find a link to a song I don't know the title of by an artist whose name I can't remember that goes beautifully with today post.

Joseph S. said...

The song I finally found is called "Modern Day Shepherd" by J.R. Byrd.
I had to go to J.R. Byrd's Facebook page to find it.

Go to this page and scroll down left column until you find Modern Day Shepherd. I recommend you reduce the volume. Let's dedicate this to Cricket

Hi Cheryl! I had a cat very similar to Mouse when I was a teenager. Her name was Pickle because she was always getting herself into a pickle. I do miss that cat.

Great photos this month. I've been reading but not commenting much. Too much going on this month. And fires. Boy does SoCal have fires right now. I hope everyone is having a great end-of-summer.

Cricket has a meme-worthy expression in this photo(makes me think he's saying something like 'too...much...lasagna) and it sounds like he has a great personality! Thanks for sharing Cheryl :)

Cheryl said...

Megan, were Cricket allowed lasagna there would be no such thing as too much. He's always hungry, or so he tells us at great length and with great volume. We can't leave any food out, especially if it contains yeast or involves roasting with olive oil.

Very lovely cat, and all of his names somehow suit him - even though we can only see his head. And tongue. I love his markings.

I almost giggle every time I open the blog up and see the header, "This blog is going to the dogs, Day X," and...there's a very obvious picture of a CAT.

Colin, I'm like you - except in the reverse. Sorry cat lovers. I'm definitely of the canine persuasion - but I still enjoy the pictures, no matter which is posted. As they say, to each his own!

Cricket! What a great name and what a cute kitty!

I'm enjoying Cricket's expression. It looks like you just told a good joke and he's having a laugh, with an accompanying nose whistle, of course!

And if you humans would like a good laugh, check out these photos of cats sitting on glass tables:

E.M., yesssss!

"...so the snake, you see, he thinks he's getting away because I'm staring down a bird in the opposite direction. Oh puh-lease. You shoulda seen me pounce -- HUMAN! ... Meow..."

Did I catch them all?

Diane: I have been a bit delinquent in my blog visitation recently, but I hope to make up soon. We'll see if Pen can get an "Awww" out of me... ;)

Donna: Yup, the dog pictures can be cute and funny, but, not quite Awww-worthy, at least for me. :)

I love cricket. He looks like the cat I was going to adopt when I found Gage. I love that little pink tongue. I won't speculate on the nicknames. What a regal looking cat, though. I'm sure he is such a joy to own, most of the time. He has such a sweet face.

I've thought about getting another cat and then I go down to my son's to babysit and his two cats lie around all day sleeping and I think, "I've already got one pet who lies around under the desk sleeping all day, do I want another who will probably insist on sleeping on the keyboard?"

Ha, Joseph, you win the pun wars.

Melanie, I agree about the nicknames. Cat, one of our mare's names was actually Peppys Lady Five, but she was always curious as a cat, so we just called her Cat. Nickel's name was Five Of Cash, so we shortened that to Nickel since a five of cash was five cents. Peppys Rebecca Cinco, just became Cinco.

When Skidboot was born we had very long runs for the mares and foals. She'd run as hard as she could and then squat down and skid at the last minute before she hit the end. I told Don we were going to have to put skidboots on her before she was a week old. Since the name was already sticking, I just named her WW Skidboot. Her daddy was Joannies Six and she was out of Peppys Lady Five. I should have some up with something a little more reflecting her pedigree-Tanquery Gin and Hollywood Gold and Mr San Peppy.

Anyway, yup. Animals always come up with nicknames except poor old Gage. Gage is just Gage. The downside of a deaf rescue dog. What do you call your dog? It doesn't matter, he can't hear. Of course that doesn't keep me from talking to him all day and him looking at me when my mouth is moving like, "Why does she keep moving her mouth when there's nothing to eat?"

Cricket definitely has the look of admiralty!

Me, too, Joseph!!

Lennon Faris said...

Haha, he looks like a nose-whistler! A stately respectable one, of course. I'm curious where the 'paintyfoot' nickname comes from? Does the Admiral like to create art?

Diane - Just checked out your post, Pen is definitely 'awwww' worthy :)

Colin Smith said...

Diane: OK, I checked out the pictures on your blog... and the closest I came to an "Awww" was with the picture of Goss nuzzled against Pen. And the "Awww" was for Goss. Such an adorable kitty! Those are nice pictures, though, and Pen seems a nice dog. :)

It sounds like Cricket has had a varied, eventful life. Nicknames like that come from past experience. :)

Lovely cat, Cheryl!

What a cutie. Our tuxedo cat was black and white, but gray and white is quite dashing, too.

I don't know why it is, but some cats simply demand additional nicknames. Our rescue cat, Moki, has had her name expanded to Princess Moki-Pants as well as earned the following monikers: The Ebony Snowball, Miss Roundy, and Pillbug. And I'm sure the list is just beginning...

Caption: "Perhaps a bit more salt."

Awwww. Cricket is a beautiful cat, and judging by the nicknames, a busy one. I'd love to have a cat, but hubby and son are allergic. Besides, the dog would probably make its life miserable. So thank you for sharing yours.

When Mehitabel was a kitten, her name was "Mehitabel Stop That"

While the dog pictures have been sweet and wonderful, I am a cat person through and through. Glad we have entered the kitty portion of our show!

Cheryl said...

Beth, busy is exactly the word for Cricket. When he's not sleeping he's always up to something. Luckily for us he's pretty predictable.

Panda, one day I was on the phone with my sister and this exchange happened:

ME: So I was reading this book -- Cricket, no!

SISTER: You read that book a lot.

Oh my gosh.
I forgot how to post.
I like paintyfoot the best. :)

What a gorgeous cat! I miss having a kitty around but there are so many cats in our 'hood and they all use our place as their neutral ground so I figure bringing in a new cat would be asking for trouble. So I'm just the sucker who feeds and pets all the cats who show up at my back door.

Donnaeve said...

CAPTION: You call THAT tuna?

OMG, look at that expression! I LOVE it. Like he just ate something disagreeable but is trying to be polite about it. If Monty Python had a Ministry of Silly Cat Faces to go with their Ministry of Silly Walks, Cricket would be featured.

Thanks for sharing, Cheryl. Totally cracked me up on a day when I'm feeling melancholy.

Cricket is so cute. I can see a whole line of stuffed animal kitties based on him.

Ha ha, Cheryl! I bet many kittens have a similar suffix added to their names. My other cat, no longer with us (referred to as "The back up kitty") continued bad behavior until her untimely (NOT! Sorry...not sorry) end in the great outdoors. I once wrestled her to the ground for possession of a pork chop (back up kitty, not Mehitabel) and once she knocked an expensive bottle of wine off the counter, when it broke and I had to spend an entire day hosing down the rug outside and I never got the stain out completely.

I am pretty sure Mehitabel put a contract out on her.
