Happy Day After!

Nightmusic, did you see the moon last night? The moon in Michigan last night was a "presence" in the dark sky- Hard to look away. How can the moon produce such longing?

Happy Boxing Day!

That was a beautiful moon. Would have been more so if there’d been snow on the ground, but hey… it was beautiful.

Happy Boxing Day!

We've had a good Christmas. Everybody made it to my grandparents' house in a reasonable timeframe, some people are still here, Elka is perplexed by the Christmas tree yet again) but is happy to racehorse gallop around their considerably larger back yard, and I finally finally started reading His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik and it is AMAZING.

Oh, and my cousin is no longer running for mayor of Baltimore. He's running for city council president.

Didn't get a chance to watch my favorite Christmas movies on schedule this year so having a marathon this morning. Watched the Twilight Zone episode Night of the Meek (and found out from a radio announcer friend that it's Rod Serling's birthday and discovered from an actor friend that he won an Emmy for that episode. Well deserved). I love synchronicity. Then it was on to It's a Wonderful Life and now I'm watching Die Hard. Saving Hubby's favorite, A Christmas Carol, for when he's well enough to watch it with me.

And I'm working on a story I started for a one-act play competition (minimal characters, minimal set). I got cast in a show so never finished it. It's a bit dark for me. The play version takes place in a cell on Christmas Eve. I'm working on the screenplay version, which I like better. Will write them both, see what happens. I can always produce the one-act as a Fringe show.

I'm tired of writing for myself.

Santa was good to the maelstrom known as my kids. And we only had half a dozen or so Nerf shootings.

Boxing Day? That's all right for some. I'm off to the woods to celebrate Wren Day.

Happy Recover From the Holidays Day! Or week, as I expect this week to go. We had a wonderful Christmas with family, complete with the traditional Italian feast(s), movies, and lots of napping and reading. It was exactly the kind of peaceful, low-key Christmas I think we all needed this year, but now I'm looking forward to taking it slow and getting back to the writing. Hope everyone enjoyed their holidays!

The way it's been going the past couple a days, I need to say Merry Belated Christmas, THANK YOU JANET for all you've done this year for us woodland critters, and what a lovely card Kitty sent - unlike the one I did. But I hope it put a big toothy smile on your face.

Also, while I'm out here, I ought to just go ahead and say Happy New Year, Happy Valentine's Day, Happy Easter, Happy Memorial Day, and on and on. Minutes, hours, days got sucked into the maelstrom known as The Holidays - and it ain't over yet, but my spidey senses is telling my "free" time is getting ready to be on the short end of the clock this year - that and a few things percolating along in the background.

Hope everyone enjoyed the holiday. I made homemade eggnog, and I'm seriously thinking of spiking it as I take down the tree.

Happy Day of Rest! I think most people need a buffer day between the busyness of Christmas and getting anything done.

I didn't get to see the moon, really. If it had been nicer, I might have gone out looking for a good view, but it was the coldest night we've had this winter, down to -29 C (about -20 F). At least my furnace kicked in about midnight, so I was able to sleep.

Wren Day

It's been a busy couple of days. My mum had 11 people for supper Christmas Eve and for breakfast Christmas morning. My sister had 17 people for supper last night. I have one thing to do today, and then I think I'll be sleeping most of tomorrow.

Donna, you can't take down the tree yet! Where will los Tres Reyes Magos leave their presents on Epiphany?

Thank you, BJ, for the enlivened link.

Yesterday I was given a book: "Humans of New York: Stories" and I think it's a great resource for writers. Every page a picture and a story, sometimes just a line or two. Every story an amazing insight into the human spirit.

p. 163 "For the longest time, I was so focused on being deaf in my left ear that I almost forgot my other ear was perfectly fine."

InkStainedWench - no way can I keep this tree up until Jan 6th!

Speaking of Three Wise Men - how tasteless would it be to share a joke about them?

Um, likely very, but here goes! (it's the only joke I can remember)

Why did the Three Wise Men smell like smoke?

Because they came from afar.

I feel compelled to post since there are only 15 comments ahead of me. :-)

Hey Donna I have cocktail napkins that say,
"Three Wise Men, you've got to be kidding."

Thank you, Donna, for the grin. Thank you, 2Ns, for transporting me from afar to guffaw.

Thank you, Janet, for so much compelling insight this year. And I am looking forward to next year and many more Boxing Days to come. Merci!

A well deserved rest, Lady Queen. Might have to imitate that bear too.

We played a fun new game last night of "Supply the Caption" to family photos. I don't remember anything but the laughter, because everything is funnier after midnight when the recycling container is overflowing. (Sorry neighbors, who knew the echo of bottles would be so loud?)

OMG, BEAR.

Hope everyone's holiday was merry and bright. Very happy to see you taking a day off, Janet. Well deserved and long overdue.

I'm having a couple days down time before my daughter and her husband arrive Monday to stay for a week. That's the best kind of (being) present. :) I will likely be scarce around here while they're in town.

Happy Boxing Day everyone. Glad you're resting, Janet, but if I may ask, where did you get my photo?

Donna, I can't believe you're already taking your tree down. It took me 3 days to put mine up, so it's staying up until the Epiphany.

As for the 3 Wise Men, I saw this on FB.
If the Three Wise Men had been Three Wise Women, they would have:

Asked directions,
Arrived on time,
Helped deliver the baby,
Cleared the stable,
Made a casserole,
Brought practical gifts,
And there would be peace on Earth.

We were walking toward Notre-Dame Cathedral last evening when the full moon peeked out from behind the clouds like a huge silvery guiding light. It was gorgeous.

In the play I just did, we had a drive-by nativity. I was one of the wise men (frankincense). There was a running gag with the one who didn't want to bring myrhh so she would shout out things like chapstick, brass candlesticks so of course the rest of us got into it - my contributions were his and hers terrycloth bathrobes and a deluxe salad shooter with party attachments.

Thank QOTKU for the daily inspiration. Enjoy relaxing.

John, Supply the caption sounds like a great game.

When I was seven I was one of the three dancing Ms. Santas for the school play. We were the chorus and had to introduce all the acts, including the wise men. My mom made my costume. I needed a white shawl to compliment the red dress and white bonnet. No white shawl to be found.

Mom took the curtain from her bathroom and draped it over my shoulders. It was made of a thousand and one strings. I was horrified so she let me wear one of her rings.

About half way through the play we three graceless, leggy girls held hands and twisted around and under. The curtain caught on the ring. We wound ourselves into a knot. The parents laughed. Two teachers had to untie us. I'm sure my face was redder than my dress.

I don't remember if the wise men ever made the stage.
