I do indeed have a lovley garden(yard? where do we stand on this?) out front, but seeing as I live in West Swindon I'd probably come home to find it on fire or something!!!
I just emailed my daughter's girl scout troop leaders and gave them the links. Three of the parents in this group are writers, so I imagine we'll have no trouble gathering books to keep the shelves full. If we distribute the work out over the troop, it will make an awesome community service project.
I live in a small bedroom community for Kansas City. One nice thing about my job is I can get things done around here. We're going to have one made as a Christmas present for the town.
I love this! If I didn't live in the boondocks, I'd put one up in my front yard. I like the idea of the Girl Scouts doing something like this as a community service project. My daughter will be working on her Silver Award soon, and a community library program might be a great project for her! Wow!
One of my writing partners has one of these in her front yard! She has a great location for it--a nice open yard on a street that is near a train stop and a YMCA so it's well-traveled by pedestrians. I put a few books in it one day and when I stopped by again two weeks later, there was an entirely new batch of books in there.
We have these all over in Madison. There's one kiddy corner to our house that looks kind of like a doll house. :) I have a stack of books that will go in it once it empties enough to fit stuff in again.

I'd put one in my front yard, but we live at the end of the road in the Swamp, and coyotes don't read.

It seems like a NYC type solution would be to put them inside the local businesses or convenience stores.
It's a bit more of a project than dropping one in the front yard, but seems manageable.
