Dodged a bullet!

This is one prize  I'll be very happy not to win!

History News Network asked historians for nominations for the Least Credible History Book in Print.

YIKES!!

And the winner is The Jefferson Lies: Exposing the Myths You've Always Believe About Thomas Jefferson by David Barton. The foreword is by Glenn Beck.

It's rather frightening to think one can go into a store and buy a "history" book which is mostly made up. People rely on the accuracy of historians and the supposed fact-checking of the publisher. It's getting to the point where there is no "non" in nonfiction anymore.

Glenn Beck is the worst they could find? Is there nothing out there with Rush Limbaugh’s name on it?

I secretly love all those little 'history' books that float around the B&N bargain bins ("Sex Lives of the Popes!" "Myth and Lore of Monsters!"), but I know they are the work of researchers who proooobably aren't history scholars.

If I actually want history then I look for books printed by university presses with fifty pages of footnotes and suggested reading at the back.

Aaaand I almost just chocked on my water.

Granted, I'm a little punchy and that always makes me prone to fits of giggling, but still...

Nice.

And clearly, by "chocked" I meant "choked."

Because....yeah. It's Friday night. :)

Thank you, Mr. Beck. Your endorsement of this periodical has saved me precious dollars. Please feel free to endorse other literary flyweights or tomes of dubious scholarship. Endearingly yours,
