The lovely and elusive Helen

Michael Cunningham writes lovely, lyrical novels. Here's one of the reasons why.

I've always insisted that poetry can only be translated by a poet, who creates a new poem from the original. I've written poetry in English, German and Russian. I found it harder to translate the German and Russian ones to English than it was to write them originally.

Interesting that the Italian words for 'translate' and 'betray' have a common root.

Sorry, now that I have read pages 2 and 3, I know who Helen is, a remarkable woman, and so is HZ, an agent and fire-fighter.
