Yesterday morning at FPLM...

Man (arriving at door with large package) "Is Janet here?"

FPLM Door Dragon "Who?"

Man "Janet Reid?"

FPLM Door Dragon "No, not here."

Man "Meredith?"

FPLM Door Dragon "Meredith Hays, the literary agent?"

Man "No, I think she's Janet's assistant or familiar"

FPLM Door Dragon "no, not here"

Man (sweat appearing on brow) "Suzie? Suzie Townsend?"

FPLM Door Dragon "no, no Suzie"

Man (clutching bag to chest, breathing hard) "Did I dream all this?"

FPLM Door Dragon "Who are you?"

Man (fearfully) "Sean. Sean Ferrell"

FPLM Door Dragon "And is that a manuscript in the bag?"

Sean (somewhat choked up) "No, it's a gift for Janet and Meredith for pub day"

FPLM Door Dragon "Publication? Publication of what?"

Sean (weeping now) "My novel NUMB is being published today. I brought cupcakes!"

FPLM Door Dragon "Well, why didn't you say so!!"

Confetti falls from ceiling, marching band emerges from behind door, godsends descend on cupcakes, and a shark dives in:

Congratulations to Sean! I just ordered the Kindle edition! Hoping it comes with a virtual cupcake?

Hysterical! And so cool you guys hire real dragons...

Ah, so they did save you one after all. According to some very (okay, not so) reliable sources, the cupcakes were gone long before you returned. Not even crumbs were left. I guess I shouldn't believe everything I read on Twitter ;)

Poor Sean, nearly bitten by the hand that feeds him; so many sharks in the pub world.

I'm jealous he got to deliver the cupcakes in person.

It really went a little something like this:

Very sweaty man walks in carrying a bag of cupcakes. Lovely young ladies at the front desk eye him suspiciously.

Me: Hi, I know it's a long shot since it's not yet noon, but is Janet in?

First lovely young lady: Uh...

Second lovely young lady: I don't think so. (She pretends to check.) No, she's not.

Me: What about Meredith?

The Lovely Young Ladies look at each other suspiciously, trying to figure out how I know about Meredith as I am clearly a deranged author trying to corner an agent to share an unwanted manuscript, a deranged author trying to gain entry through bribes and the awkwardness of arriving unbidden.

First Lovely Young Lady: Uh...

Second Lovely Young Lady: No, she's on vacation. Yeah, that's it. Vacation.

Me: How about Suzie?

Now they are really flustered. Who am I? How do I KNOW THESE NAMES?!

First Lovely Young Lady: Uh...

Second Lovely Young Lady: Let... me... check... (she disappears through a doorway) Suzie? There's a... someone... a man... here to... uh...

Suzie and the Second Lovely Young Lady reappear.

Suzie: OH! HEY! CONGRATULATIONS!

The two Lovely Young Ladies are now absolutely flummoxed.

Suzie: This is Sean Ferrell.

Lovely Young Ladies: OH! HI!

Me: I was going to say I was Dan Krokos, but I didn't want you to call security.

Congratulations! I wish you would have gone with Dan Krokos though. Then you would have some experience in being arrested and strip searched and all.

Too funny.

Super congrats, Sean. Your book is next on my list of Super Books Written By Authors Of Agents I Adore.

LOL. I love that cupcake.

I believe it shows good policy to inspect every package. Especially the ones smelling of chocolate and cake.

Can’t be too careful these days

The poor little thing. I hope he recovered enough to enjoy one of the cupcakes.

Hint: Rainbow cookies work well, too.

Hey, I recognize that little Sharkie! I'll tell the Mauslings she's living it up and eating cupcakes in her new home.

Sean, congrats!! So exciting...

This story reminds of my favorite entry from SlushPile Hell:

To the sweaty writer driving an Econoline van who hand delivered his manuscript:

Thank you for not killing me.

Congratulations, Sean! I can't wait to buy the book!!

Congratulations Sean. Well done.

There were no marching bands or confetti, but I'll never forget the day my first novel was published. I was the king of the world (with all due respect to that Cameron fellow).

Congratulations, Sean!!

and for everyone who just drooled a little and went, "mmm...cupcake," here is a little something you may either love me for or want to kill me for:

5 Minute Chocolate (or vanilla) Cake

1 microwave safe large coffee mug
4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons baking cocoa
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons oil
3 tablespoons chocolate chips(optional)
a small splash of vanilla extract

Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well
Add the egg and mix thoroughly.
Pour in the milk and oil and mix well.
Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla extract and mix again.
Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts.
The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but that's okay.
If you don't like chocolate, substitute confectioner's sugar for the cocoa and it will be vanilla cake.

Yep, cake in 5 minutes.

Sean Ferrell, I think I have a crush on you.

Hilarious. Good as your post is, I think Sean's comment trumped you, though.

BTW, I don't have a clue who Dan Krokos is, but Sean Ferrel is absolutely famous in this neckuvthuhwoods. Universally recognized as a great author on the rise.

Best wishes for outrageous success and I hope both of you make so much money off his book that it leaves you NUMB with joy - only temporarily, of course.
