THE hottest book at BEA

No surprise there, it's Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. Catching Fire is the sequel to The Hunger Games, a book I wrested from Michael Bourret in hand to hand combat last year at an AAR meeting.

Galleys for Catching Fire were handed out on a very limited basis. Several pals rose at ungodly hours to get in line early. My strategy was slightly different: steal one.

Sadly, Jenn Laughran did not fall for my ploy (Hey! Look over there, it's Daniel Pinkwater!)

I tried plying Holly Root with vast quantities of mai-tais so I could steal hers, but sadly, I succumbed to the ravages of strong drink before she did (I may have been outsmarted there!)

I guess I may be reduced to begging. Tiffany! Ohhhh Tiffany!!!

My friends and I were desperate for this. We made a pact to all try our publishing wiles and if any of the three of us got, we'd share. When I called them to let them know I had secured one I felt like I ought to do it in code. "The mockingjay has landed!" or something.

I have a friend in a high place who snagged me one. Now she "owns me." The slavery will be worth it, though. More than halfway through the book and my heart is pounding. :)

Wish I had friends to snag me one! I have to wait until it comes out like normal people.

I just finished The Hunger Games, so I'm terribly sorry you couldn't get your hands on Catching Fire. I can't wait to read it!

Agh I want it sooooo badly.

I read The Hunger Games about three weeks ago and was deeply, deeply impressed. May be the best book I've read all year, even over Graceling and The Graveyard Book.

I am SALIVATING for Catching Fire. And I'll have to wait an extra three weeks, most likely, for it to ship to Japan. AGH!

Of course! I'll mail it out this week. E-mail me where you where you want it sent. Let's discuss it with you when you're done!

While you're waiting, I hope you can find something else to keep your interest *cough*FLASH *cough*

Oh no! Tiffany just mailed her copy to ~ME~! Does that make me SHARK BAIT??

Of course, I'd be happy to pass it on after I'm done... :)

It is so very good. I read it in a sitting.

I was lucky enough to walk right onto the end of the line just as the last galleys were being given out (this sort of blessed fortune doesn't usually happen to me). Plan on reading it this week and can't wait.

I'm not surprised that you were able to wrest The Hunger Games away from Micael Bourret in hand to hand combat...after all, it was hardly a fair fight (two against eight).

But to hear that someone else could drink you under the table... I'm sorry, but I'm having a lot of trouble coming to grips with that one. Oh, what a world, what a world!

No worries, Janet. I did send Emily MY copy (she made me swear the CP oath pre-BEA) but I’ve hijacked a friend’s copy (she’s finished too). If you want it, it’s yours to borrow.

Oh man. I would so love to have this book. Just like everyone else.

I have no idea what is wrong with the folks at Scholastic. I've written several time, offering to review this book for them and they've completely ignored me.

I'm ashamed at what I'd do to get my hands on that book.

Holly has one? Time to email her...

Ditto Lynne.

I have a copy that you can borrow (yes, I want it back - no stealing :) As soon as I finish reading it - I'll bring it in!

Ah, to have connections. Unfortunately, I don't. Unless one of you wish to take pity on me. (I will beg if needed.)

Yay, there's an editor sending me her copy! There was kind of a Facebook-comment-smackdown with a couple of us competing for her galley after she finished it. One guy went on and on about the hero's journey of The Hunger Games, but I reminded the editor that when she came to our SCBWI conference I borrowed my daughter's cool Mustang instead of driving her around town in my Honda Dorkmobile. I also mentioned that my new WIP has the word "penis" on the 1st page, so you know what that means--hellooooo, Newbery! So that's kind of a brush with greatness opportunity for her, loaning her Catching Fire ARC to a future award-winner.
