Oh, my stars. He really was my favorite author. I loved Time Line for the wonderful attention to detail although Jurassic Park was one of the books I read more than once. Being a dinosaur buff, it was refreshing to see someone handle the subject as well as he did.
My word, what a horrible loss. I am really saddened by this news.
I can't believe there won't be more books - I have recommended him to every booklover I meet. I have yet to read an author who does the incredible amount of research that Michael did as well as making us believe the fantastic. The sun has gotten dimmer today...I can't believe how sad I feel for someone who I have only met between the pages of the most wonderful books.
Oh, wow. Sad news. Crichton was a role model for me. I found his books - and ER came on - around the time that I went off to college. His work helped me realize that I didn't have to choose: I could study science AND English; my interest in medicine could actually inform my fiction.
I can't even think what to say. Crichton was what I loved about books. I still remember the night I decided I'd read AIRFRAME for an hour to get my mind off of class the next morning, and wound up finishing at noon the next day (after having skipped all of my morning classes) in one read. His books made thrillers thought-provoking. Not just a high-action roller coaster ride, but one that would leave you thinking, "Damn, that's some pretty cool shit."
RIP, Mr. Crichton. Like laura brown said, I just can't believe there will be no more books.
I just started dissecting the outline for Jurassic Park a few days ago when I picked up a used copy at a library sale. Now he's gone? It's a huge loss. He had enormous talent.

I have fond memories of holding my sleepy-baby second born in my arms while reading Airframe in a rental house on the Kona coast.
I liked his novels because it seemed to me he was fearless. The world needs more of that.
