Elizabeth Murray 1940-2007
I'm very sorry to see Elizabeth Murray has died.
I'm not sure I understand her work fully. I know I like it. For me it met the first criteria of art--the works are instantly recognizable as hers. It also meets the second--they're fun.
The Met did a show of her work last winter and it was always fun to see people's reactions coming into the gallery. Their faces just lit up.
Her work also plays with space and perception, something I appreciate in novels as well as paintings.
Here's more about Elizabeth Murray.

I'm not certain I care for this style, but I did get a little thrill when I realized I was looking at a teacup. I wonder why it's called "Yikes."
I think of it as a face!
Humm ... My take on why it's called Yikes is that it's broken.
See the tea spilling out and the crack down the middle?
I always say "yikes" when I spill my tea. Okay, so I lied. I usually say something else and get a rag.
And when a visitor sat one of my antique double-handled Limoges tea cup and saucer at his feet and then kicked a crack in it, I thought something much different than "yikes."
Well, I can see where you get a face. But the 'ear' is the handle of the tea cup. And the 'nose' is an extension of one of the splashes.
Say ... maybe this is some sort of ink-blot (I can't sepll Rorschach at all) test. And we tea cup people are sane. I hope. And the face people are Literary Agents?

I love your blog too. She has a lot of art at the Tate museum in London. I was there in the spring with my two young boys. Note to self: Leave kids with husband.
