Emergency crews evacuated a building at Eastern Illinois University on Friday morning after a campus postal carrier discovered a disheveled package heading for the college's admission's office.
"There was no return address, it was poorly written, poorly addressed to the university, there were misspellings," said Vicki Woodard, a university spokeswoman. "There was some tape over it. Just the overall appearance was rather strange."
The stuffed and stained enveloped was strange enough that the police officers alerted the bomb squad.
Explosives investigators blocked off a street and X-rayed the package before learning that it contained nothing more than an application to the university.
I'm updating my query guidelines: no disheveled packages. If the bomb squad arrives with your query letter, it's a no.

Agents have the most draconian submission guidelines.
picky. picky. picky.
I got one of these in the mail -- it was my own query letter returned to me. It was after I signed with Dorian K of WMA so it didn't quite have the impact it could have.
