oh damn

Jackson's Books in Salem is closing.

I bought my first Robert Parker bookl, The Godwulf Manuscript, at Jacksons.
Katy King was on their best seller list, my first client on one.

I haven't been there in years given I live three thousand miles away now but the loss of a great indie store and the group of people who worked there is not a happy day.

You know, just this past weekend my daughter and I visited an Indie bookstore, and there really was something magical about it. The clerk didn’t talk to us with that oblivious, you’re-just-another-credit-card tone. He savored our selections. He connected them with us. We discussed: the howling wind and its obvious disdain for flags. He dug through his dusty drawers and found us a coupon.

I have no doubt that when we return, he will remember us, if only vaguely.

I also once had the privilege of staying in the cabin of an Indie bookstore owner. My husband was moonlighting for her husband. There was no TV, only stacks of books. That’s how I ended up reading KING RAT, and GIRL, INTERRUPTED.

There’s nothing more secure to me than being surrounded by a love of books.

I don’t see how Indies can survive, but I’m glad I got to experience them.

Sorry for the loss.

No! I grew up in Salem, and though I live several hours away now, I still like to browse at Jackson's whenever I'm in town. I'm so sad to hear about this. Even so, thanks for passing along the news.

I lived outside Cleveland in Hudson for many years and we had a bookstore called "The Learned Owl." Liz Murphy, owner, organized the ENTIRE DOWNTOWN for the release of the Harry Potter "Order of The Phoenix" literally transforming every store into Diagon Alley. Thousands of people turned up in costume for the events she created, all of which culminated at 12:01am with the release of the book. Her independent bookstore is a joy - right down to Maggie the shaggy dog lying in the aisle. I love independents -- they are special places. I'm sorry your favorite store closed.
