Contest results

The writing contest prompt photo was of course that of our long time furred friends Penelope and Gossamer. A lot of you were constrained by reality. I think this is the fewest finalists we've ever had!

Herewith the results

Donnaeve 10:17am
"Staring at you."

"Couldn't care less."

"Still staring."

"Still not caring."

"Staring."

"Not caring."

*silence*

"Your ear's touching me."

"Couldn't care less."

"Still touching..."

Johnell 10:24am

Quick! Cover the documents! Do something cute and she’ll never suspect … okay, she’s gone. Back to our plans for world dominance!

Angie Brookskby-Arcangioli 11:35am
Dog whispered, "I can see your brain through your ear, you know."

Cat asked "What do you see?"

"Nothing."

Kate B 1:50pm
The moment before Fido learned to let sleeping cats lie.

Sherin Nicole 5:01pm

This was her 25th reincarnation. Precisely which laws of time, space, and species would she need to break to escape this son of a bitch?

So, let me know which ones I missed.
Yes, I've been befuddled and out of sorts the last few days, but hopefully, getting back to work will fix all that!

  1. Donna's is pretty good. They all are. But I like Donna's.

  2. OMG, Donnaeve, that is hilarious! Absolutely classic.

  3. Donna's is wonderful, but Penelope's favorite was Susan's (she is unable to manage those sorts of snacks, but it took some strategizing!). Theresa's gave me such an "aww". Deb Smythe's made me laugh and scare them both.

Okay, almost all of them made me laugh or "AWW" and scare the stars.

My thoughts (and more pics and the real story) here: http://dianelmajor.blogspot.com/2017/01/aieeeeeee.html. I will abstain from the vote, having obvious conflicts of interest.

  5. These are all hilarious. Donna's did make me laugh out loud and I don't normally do that!

  6. The moment before Fido learned to let sleeping cats lie.

    Genius!

  7. Donna's cracked me up, but Kate B's. Brilliant!

  8. A part of me loves Donnaeve's, but the other part remembers eerily similar conversations that took place in the backseat of my parents' car, often ending with my brother pinching or slapping, me hollering, and both of us in the doghouse.

  9. Hey, when you're in Carkoon, the fumes make you a little goofy. That's the only way I could ever pull off this particular finalist placement.

Hope our Queen sorts herself out, and is back to feeling spiffy doodle soon!

A nod to AJ Blythe, from me!

  10. I swear I did NOT coerce AJ.

  11. Thanks AJ and Ardenwolfe! My fave wasn't in the finalists - Susan's made me chuckle. I do love Angie's, though.

  12. Personally I liked Garfield's entry.
He's clever. How could he NOT be the winner?

Perhaps I doth find myself befuddled as well.

  13. Kate has my vote. Very funny.

  14. Brigid, Joseph, and Donna for me. That doesn't help much.

  15. Kate B's "sleeping cats lie" #1
Dogs only learn that first hand ... or rather 'paw'!

  16. If we include the Flash Fiction Writing Contests, those contests for which there was a "long list" or "semi-finalists" usually only had 2 or 3 finalists. There have been a couple of flash contests that only had 5 finalists. You can check the spreadsheet for yourself in the Treasure Chest.

And in case you were wondering, I'm not including these caption contests in the spreadsheet. At the moment, the spreadsheet only documents contests that don't depend upon either a) email entries, or b) a photograph. Sorry about that. This means, among others, the book title poetry contest from a few years back isn't included. That was a fun challenge, but a lot of work for Janet. As I recall, we emailed our picture entries to her, and she would post them. I think she ended up posting three blog articles to accommodate all the entries. Fun times! :)

  17. No, I can attest to the fact there was no coercion involved... the Cakecoon Bakery Rock Cakes Donna offered were actually made from rocks.

  18. I love Kate's entry. Donna's is funny.

I'm flattered to have made it to the finals. I missed a comma. Cringe. Three sentences and a typo. Darn Iphone. Yeah, the excuses. Back to painting.

  19. Donna's as it rung so true to my sister and I 40 years ago....ooooof!

  20. Donna's and Kate's entries tickled me Razzle Dazzle pink.

  21. Diane: I'm so glad Penelope enjoyed my entry! Mikey rocks (as I called them) were my dog's favorite before Mikey passed away--I had to put up a dog gate just to keep Riley from getting into the litter box.

Loved the blog post and all the pictures. It's adorable that they get along. Riley and Mikey tolerated each other--Riley wanted to play, but Mikey was always more content to glare at him. In the long run, I think they knew we were all family and were comforted by each other's company.

These caption contests are always such fun. I laughed at so many, but since I recently read the Harry Potter series for the first time, my favorite was "Mischief managed."

  22. Kate's is my favorite because it's so simple and if a dog ever got that close to Ramona that is what would happen. Once again channeling the wonderful Gary Larson.

  23. Susan, hee. Their main interaction is Goss popping Pen on the head and starting a scuffle; the closest they come to cuddling is when there is a space heater to share, or when they're both allowed on my bed of a Saturday morning. But it's as you say: family.

I'm fortunate, when it comes to litter snacks, that Penelope absolutely WILL.NOT. take the stairs down to the basement. So that's where the box is. We just always need to make sure the basement door is ajar so Goss can get down there, or there's heck to pay for that one poor potted tree ...
