Contest results

Yesterday's flash contest was terrific! You guyz really rose to the occasion, particularly with no notice, an unknown deadline, and only 25 words. Kudos to you all!

Here's the list of entries that I thought were funny, or in some other way outstanding. The list is completely subjective, and wholly idiosyncratic.  It's not based on the caliber of the writing (except that it's all pretty good).  In other words, if your entry isn't here, don't feel bad.

frenchsojourn 9:45am
Dad turned on his Kindle, strapped on his goggles and mine.
He chose the newest supernova.
“The Adventures of Dixie Dupree” lit up the room.

Inkstained Wench (not wretch as I always try to write!) 10:15am
Pardon me; I am visually impaired. Are service humans permitted in this establishment?

Dena Pawling 10:24am
The Duchess of Yowl? No, I haven't seen her. *burp* Why do you ask?

Cecilia Ortiz Luna 10:49am
You stand guard while I blowtorch her laptop. Nanowrimo is coming.

Theresa 12:38pm
Anyone seen my siblings, Orville and Wilbur?

Scott Sloan 5:02pm
F-DOTUS IS ON THE MOVE; HEADING INTO THE CROWD.
I know the Canine Secret Service is on a short leash...
But...
I mean... C'MON...

Cipher 5:45pm
There are few things in life that cannot be cured by a damn good pair of specs. Unfortunately for Jerry, weredog-ism was one of them.

The winner is of course frenchsojourn because he worked in a reference to donnaeve's upcoming debut The Education of Dixie Dupree (pubbing Tuesday!)

Sadly, Hank is off sojourning in France, so I can't mail him the book for his prize.

Thus, Miss Congeniality gets the prize and that's of course Dena Pawling, who worked in a reference to The Duchess of Yowl (who is amused to her toes to find herself anywhere near A Dog.)

Dena, if you'll send me your mailing address, I'll get your prize off to you.

Thanks to all who took the time to enter!  As always, the array of talent on display here is pretty mind boggling!

  9. Congrats Hank (and thank you!) and Dena!!!

This was a really cool contest. I loved the brevity, and the pic to go along with it.

  13. My 4 copies of The Education of Dixie Dupree have shipped according to Amazon. So excited. I am giving copies to my girl's group tomorrow. We meet once a week for drinks and I think all 3 will love this book. We're all deeply Southern after all and that one is even from Alabama.

I loved all the entries. That was fun.

  15. Oops. Somehow I missed the 25-word limit part. But this one was such fun!

Congrats Hank and Dena. And congrats Donna! What an exciting time!

  16. Wow, Amazon must be sick of holding the inventory all this time. LOL!

  17. I had a cute, little dog EAT the Duchess of Yowl, and not only was I NOT immediately exiled to Carkoon, I actually won the contest????

That's right up there on the improbability scale with the fact that it rained on and off all day yesterday in SoCal, and it's still going, with thunder and lightning. And for anyone interested, my dog does NOT like thunder.

Aaaaaand, we just had a power outage for a few seconds. I'd better get this posted before I have to retype it on my phone.

    Greetings from boom-town CA.

Congrats to Hank! And I liked the service humans also.

Thanks Janet. You made my week =)

  18. Congrats to Hank and Dena! Fun contest although I really need to get my eyes checked. It wasn't until I read some of the entries that I realized our doggie was wearing goggles, not sunglasses. Sigh.

Off to stumble my way to the coffee pot.

  19. Well, that was fun! Congratulations to the winners! I think this group loves a challenge. I always love a picture prompt for flash fiction, and then it's so fun to see where people go with it. This was a great pic!

I check my mail every day. I thought Dixie would be here by now. Amazon don't fail me now!

  26. I started reading Dixie yesterday. It's heavy going after The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend, but I'm enjoying it.

  27. Well done Hank and Dena. And Donna!

That was some fine brevity for a fine pup.

  28. Haha, these are great. Congrats, Hank and Dena! I love the flash contest idea.

My Dixie Supernova is also on its way. I hope the delivery people remember to wear their welding goggles!

  29. Great job by everyone! The dog is my dog, Leo, who was at the vet getting laser treatment. Goggles are to protect the eyes.

I read him the winners and he approved.

  30. Haha loved these! all of them. Congrats, Dena and Hank :)

Colin - you're a lot younger than him but your entry reminded me of just something my own dad would say. Made me laugh! Go Dad humor :)

Donna - shipped! I plan on reading DIXIE as soon as I'm done of Melanie Sue Bowles's DOGS OF PROUD SPIRIT - such a sweet read. Tear-jerker too but very heartwarming for any animal lovers out there!

  31. Off topic but this is relevant to books and may help someone.

Every weekend C-SPAN2 cablecasts forty-eight straight hours of appearances by authors discussing various books they have written. Non-fiction only/ Sorry, fiction fans. At least I have not seen fiction on there yet, although a few of the purportedly “non-fiction” books were politically motivated fiction. If you do not have cable (WHAT?) or your service provider does not offer C-SPAN2 (!!), or if those knaves have the audacity to want you to pay extra (!!!), you can watch all their stuff on www.BookTV/org and get a TV schedule showing what’s cooking in case you have insomnia at 2 A.M. (Yes, some weekends I do watch BookTV at 2 A.M. It’s addictive/)

Unfortunately this is a great venue for political crackpots (right and left wing.) But some of these speakers are worth listening to big time. You just have to use discernment. It is better than the unending Trump Reality Show, which will not end in November whether he wins or not.

There is also a search engine at BookTV.org that you can use to see if one of your favorite authors has anything on the site. Apparently everything they have ever shown is on site.

  32. Steve,

That's a great heads up. I don't have cable. I got sick of the all out media war to get Trump nominated by giving him Billions of free air time while making mortal candidates pay for their exposure. I cannot express my pure contempt for the media championing these two career criminals and openly laughing that Trump may not be good for America, but he's great for ratings.

No, I see no circumstances in which I would ever spend another dime on cable, or prime time networks. I miss the history channel and some of the historical talks on c-span and following congressional debates, but not enough to enrich any of them by one thin dime.

I only wish I could afford voodoo dolls by the gross.

  33. Funny enough, DIXIE DUPREE popped up today on my "New for You" recommended section on Amazon. I even took a screenshot to remind me that yes, we CAN do this.

Congratulations again, Donna. This is your time to revel!

  34. Congratulations Hank and Dena! I loved all the entries. Thanks for the impromptu short flash contest, Your Sharkliness :)
And Donna, I can't wait to see your name up there in the NYTBSA lists!

  35. Cheers to Hank and Dena.

Because of that picture with a dog wearing goggles, my wife almost made off with a real dog.

Fortunately, the owner was there to back me up and prevent my wife from adding the dog to our backseat.

I seriously need to check her meds.

    As always, fun-fun.

  36. Donnaeve, guess what just came up in my email - my preorder has arrived on my kindle! Woooooo hoo!!! Happy publication day - slightly earlier for me than for most of you, apparently! - and congratulations. Can't wait to read it. :)

  37. Yeah Hank, sorry you got somewhat robbed again

Yeah Dena, now you need a new hobby. Making voodoo dolls could be considered passe now.
