In no particular order - intensive care, end of world, birth, death, marriage, hot date, no date, PMS, DDS, run away, stay away, meeting with Trump, good night's sleep to name a few. Have nice day all.
On Monday, Janet talked about are you a good writer. I post on Books and Writers forum frequently a thread I call Butt In The Chair. It's a note of encouragement to the writers there to keep going, keep writing, don't give up. Usually, it includes a quote from a writer about writing.
In looking for a quote today, I ran across this from Mark Twain:
“I haven't any right to criticize books, and I don't do it except when I hate them. I often want to criticize Jane Austen, but her books madden me so that I can't conceal my frenzy from the reader; and therefore I have to stop every time I begin. Every time I read Pride and Prejudice I want to dig her up and beat her over the skull with her own shin-bone.” ― Mark Twain
It's a reminder. Not everyone is going to like what you write. Not everyone has to. Just write the best story you can and don't give up.
my contest entry, too late..... :) breaking all the rules, but here it is, anyway....
Federico leans shivering over a riverbank in the midst of shooting himself in the foot. Man in water seeks one fish. He can't stop staring at his new spin rod, tip bobbing, 100-word lure on the line. Waters roar. El Rio Grande. La bebida de los dioses swirls at his ankles as likely to pull him under as to quench his thirst. Every floating log's a ferry. Oye. Rico's basso rises over the din. Its pitch swells tenor to mezzo, to falsetto, telling the river, why, o, when will song become more than the sum of its notes?
I totally lost this weekend. Did not even finish my flash fiction entry. A definite case of writer ADD. Well, one more week and I go to beach. Sun, long walks, long reads, and loads of writing. Stay safe everyone. Looks like the blaze that is burning down the world hit Orlando this weekend. How do we get to love, kindness, and decency in the face of such unbridled hate and intolerance?
Orlando is hurting, y'all. The Voice singer shot at a venue right next to my favorite shopping center. Now mass shooting at Pulse. I was up working on my contest entry. Needless to say I got sidetracked. Please keep everyone in your prayers.
I suspect that Janet has been doing a whole lot of agenting. And missing the Duchess of Yowl.
Julie's Butt in Chair has been my mantra all week. I needed to come up with 2000 words to submit in advance of the week-long Write by the Lake, which starts tomorrow. Launching a new project is always precarious, so I'm very much looking forward to sitting down with a few other non-fiction writers to talk about and to do writing.
*That there is me having a grown up temper tantrum.*
Seriously, I get it. I've been editing like a fiend, so, I almost didn't enter FF. Then, damn, I did. I keep wondering what it will take to NOT enter? I think I need a formal diagnosis on that.
Very sad about the Orlando shootings. Unbelievable - as they always are. I love Julie's snippet above. And so with that, back to editing, and I hope everyone finds some peace and harmony in their day today. Turn off the TV. That will help.
I started drafting a rant about the Pulse tragedy and our inability to do anything about our national gun madness, but I deleted it. Nothing I can say can touch the anguish of the people involved. I wish I could do more.
And now there's no WIR?
Of course I miss it. All of Janet's words of wisdom and encouragement are precious. But held up against what else has happened, my missing the WIR counts for nothing.
I'm going to hug my kids and my husband extra hard, and tell those I love how important they are to me, and do what I can to make the world a fraction brighter where I am. There's nothing else to do.
Julie Weathers, from your Mark Twain quotation, he apparently kept reading Pride and Prejudice because he said every time I read ... An interesting response, don't you think?
My first thought: Yes! She's human (well, Sharkly) and she maybe really *does* only have the same 24 hours per day as the rest of us! Take care of you, and leave us to our running wheels. Plus, there's all those lovely 'single sentence' stories to try and judge :-)
In my head I imagine this with Janet muttering "White Dove, Cottage White, Linen White, All White, Wedding Veil, Tailor's Chalk, White Whisper, Antique White, Ivory White, Cloud White, Cotton Balls, Paper White..."
No worries. Whatever you've been doing, I hope it has served to re-charge your batteries and refresh your outlook. Deviating from routine on occasion is good for all of us, as is the reminder not to take things for granted.
I've had my head down, writing. Trying to ignore the heat and humidity, as well as a good portion of humanity. Present company excluded.
My guess is: amazing shit for your clients that they're so grateful for, they gave you bottles upon bottles of scotch, and you were drunk, dizzy, and rereading Lee Child all night and totally forgot about the WIR.
Yes, for me the question is always, "How the hell do you have the time to do this?" Not, "Where the fuck is it?"
I echo Donna's tantrum. I kept checking my inbox for the WIR, to no avail. In the perspective of this morning's tragic news, it is a very small hill of beans, but still, we cling to what gives us comfort. Watch some panda videos everyone. https://youtu.be/zEzSfF-IutA
(Colin could you linkify for me? my clumsy paws and tiny panda brain can't manage it. Thanks)
And yeah, you all bring a lot of comfort and joy into my life.
I wrote 40,000+ words in the past two weeks. Sometimes I amaze myself. But a whole lot of other stuff didn't get done, at least by me. But that's OK. So I certainly wouldn't worry about why the WIR hasn't happened! I'm with the group that's always amazed you managed to do this at all, nevermind that you seem to enjoy doing it. You're awesome, Janet. Seriously. (You all are.)
Julie quoted, "...I often want to criticize Jane Austen, but her books madden me so that I can't conceal my frenzy from the reader; and therefore I have to stop every time I begin. I *totally* understand. Although one of my book loving god-daughters recently explained her in a way that means I may have to try again. Maybe after that I'll be content to beat her over the skull with a wet noodle instead.
Though I live in Fla. I didn't hear about Orlando until late morning. A frantic friend called and told me. She was frantic because her brother is/was missing.
Her parents had disowned him when he came out. That kind of attitude always chafed at me. It is also going to make this a bigger disaster. Last time I checked only six of the victims had been posted on Orlando's website. That is probably because of the desire to inform the next of kin before publishing the victim's name. That is going to be a shaky thing if their parents have disowned them.
I had long thought that such things happen in other places. I know better now and hope this is the one that causes sane legislation to be put in place.
I also hope it makes for a deep investigation of the FBI. They had flagged this shooter and someone decided that he wasn't a threat. They didn't even tag him when buying guns. Meanwhile they create scams where they prosecute people that their set up. Something is wrong there.
I admit that I am a gun owner. I also have a few hundred pages of FBI file. Mine started from dating an FBI Agent's daughter years and years ago. I still think a better effort can be made.

No WiR? You know it's missed, Janet, but you do what you need to. Such things lose their appeal when they become an obligation, and you are never obliged. :)
It doesn't do any good to investigate the FBI when you have an administration that ties its hands to create a false narrative that we have nothing to fear from terrorists. I have a friend in the CIA and it is very much an ongoing source of frustration.

What have you been doing? My guess is reading, wheeling and dealing in that cutthroat agent world out there, and perhaps painting. Perhaps.
ReplyDeleteHave a great Sunday!

I hope whatever you did was fun!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your Sunday, everyone.
Realistically, work.
ReplyDeleteIn my head though, you saw Hamilton every night after work.
Lucky duck.

ReplyDeleteCount me among the denizens who wouldn't dream of asking "what the holy moly have you been doing to NOT do the WIR?"
ReplyDeleteConversely, my question is ALWAYS, "how in the holy moly have you been able to find at least six extra hours in your day, and where can I sign up?!"
(Interrobang added by author for effect.)
Must have been doing some editing this weekend(wink)(although this would have been a good place to use an emoji, on principal, I refuse to use them)
ReplyDeleteWaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! Stomp, stomp stomp!!! Aiiiiyeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Crash! Flops on floor - kicks heels against floor, wall, floor again. Wrings hands! Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo WIR????

The newest member of our family is 10 days old. What kind of madness has she been born into. When will it stop? Will it ever stop?
ReplyDeleteIn the vernacular of my peers, "Give peace a chance."
John said it better, "Imagine."
And look what happened to John.

Oh, Cynthia. It's heartbreaking. We have family in Orlando, and it is just so hard to see another loss of precious life.

I have such gratitude for all that you have shared here, Janet. Plus the contests are fun. Take your time, and many enthusiastic thanks!
ReplyDeleteI didn't wonder why Janet Reid did not post a WIR today.
ReplyDeleteRather, I wonder all other weeks how she finds the time and concentration to prepare her Week in Review. It's an impressive accomplishment each week.
