I love my office! We moved to this space in August 2012 and in two weeks, we're moving next door (no change on our contact details) to a bigger space that gets The Minion away from the window and a cold draft. I, of course, need the cold draft since I am a ferocious cold-blooded sea monster when I'm at work.
So, here are the pictures of our office before we leave!
And I'm sure you'll all be glad to know: yes we are PAINTING the new office before we move in!

So are you going to have a contest about what color paint you'll use? Something sharky, perhaps? Hmm...
Could be blood red...but that might induce hunger pangs. Sharks need regular nourishment, right?
Could be toothy-grin white...but that might increase the bites taken out of manuscripts, thus discouraging prey from submitting their food offerings (aka "manuscripts") to Her Sharkiness .
Could be...yes...it must be sea blue. Protective coloration to disguise the sharks inside. Blend right in, you will!
Oh, man, you're so bloody organized! Not that I ever thought you weren't. But to see the proof...siiiigh
So glad you are thriving and steady and able to orchestrate your favorite pastime- inhaling fresh paint fumes
I assume that's you at the edge of the door-pic2. Print dress, comfortable shoes. Nice neat orderly.
Yeah MNye, who are the chicks in picture #2? And, that QOTKU on the right in the same pic, is that a Bumpa-Sticka from your number one fan and admirer with brown on her nose?
BTW, much too clean, too organized and what the hell does Janet look like anyway?
@Kitty and @Carolynn I thought the same thing. So organized and no dust. Glad the minion will escape the draft. (Sorry for the lame pun. It just came out that way.)
In the middle pic: if you tug on that manila accordion file twice, the wall spins around to a pristine bar fully stocked with scotch of various ages.
If by some chance that isn't true, please just don't tell me.
If we were talking about anyone else, I would suggest the office space was tidied up a) in preparation for moving, and/or b) in preparation for taking pictures. But QOTKU has noted before how neatly-organized shelves of office supplies make her little sharkly heart patter with delight. So my guess is that's how she likes it.
And the labeled filing cabinet in picture 2? That's where she keeps her clients. No, not their contracts or manuscripts. Her actual clients, miniaturized, and working furiously on their next novels. She keeps them alive on a diet of chocolate and whiskey, and punishes slackness with recitations of bad queries...
OK, maybe I need to lay off of Stephen King for a while... :)
@ Jared X, is that the file hiding the cold draft?
Organized-ness is next to godliness, they say. The neatness of your space is beyond impressive.
Check out that bottle on the far left, in front of the lamp. I think it's old enough to celebrate ;~)
kitty, that photoshop is genius! We did have to hide the bar while that photo was taken!
Carolynwith2ns, yup, that is my QOTKU magnet! Treasured!
And Michele, I think you're looking at the agent down the row, I'm hiding somewhere outside, hoping the bar gets replaced quickly!
OOoh, I want to see paint chips!
I'm not given to tidiness, but I love desks and bookshelves. Perhaps I'll take this as inspiration to get my own office ship-shape for the new year, so I work like a Real Writer instead of slouching on the couch with the dog and the laptop.
(though wow, how many books have I written that way at this point? Hmmm.)
MNye: I think Janet is behind the camera lens so she can't be in front as well. Besides, the print dress doesn't go with the big black handbag. (I love the bag, Janet.)
I don't see what the fuss is about being organized, but then again, I like things Zen. Oh yeah, don't we get to help you choose the color paint?
Memo to self: Make sure no other comments have been added before hitting "Publish".
Kitty: You had me going over the photos again looking for the bottle before I clicked on your link!
I am just counting the number of CPU/servers compared to desks. Seems suspicious to me. . .
No one's mentioned THE LAMPS. I love the lamps. The bases look like stacked books and the square shades...*swoon*
The shark gray walls? That's why the lamps are perfect - they add warmth. (So does scotch, but I don't think you could drink all day. Um. Could you?)
As to the organization? What makes me KNOW thse folks are ALL organized are the files on the computer screens. All lined up and in order.
With the ALOTS looking over your shoulders, I'm sure all will go well. I'd pick sea green - if I had a choice.
More CPUs means more power! Everybody who's anybody dual-boxes for max productivity ;)
I think you ought to celebrate the move with a pair of these!

The color is chosen: Montgomery white from Benjamin Moore.
Some of you will note that is the color my kitchen at home. I REALLY love it.
And yes, I love those lamps too!
Your office is amazingly warm and lovely. I also love the Montgomery white and the lamps as well.
If things ever get too organized over there, my superpower is creating instant chaos.
From some reason, it's not in high demand. ;-)
Does the bookshelf in the bottom photo hold the text book to all things Sharkly? The one titled "Chum"? (with apologies to Jeff Somers).
Please tell me you tidied in anticipation of the photo!
Wow, I am so impressed by the organization. Is it sad that I now think authors should ask an agent with a rep offer to see pictures of their offices?
I'm happy for the minion escaping the cold and drafts. Holy rolling armadillos do I empathize with that.
Congratulations on the new digs and thank all that is holy you don't have to move far.
Where is the storage closet where you keep the booze?
Odd bit of information, gray is actually the perfect decorating color. So saeth the interior decorator I used to work with who had all his professional offices painted a near shark gray because it offered the perfect backdrop for anything a client brought in and still afforded a rich look.
Anyway, once again, congratulations and now I feel the need to organize my bookcases.
Thanks.
Julie
There's only one monitor on each desk. How do you work with only one monitor?
The desk on the left..see the flat white rectangle? That's my laptop, closed. I have it open most of the time. (Thus, two screens)
Penny uses her screen and my desktop screen as well.
You're right..we DO need more than one!
I probably have the only three pics of Janet Reid smiling. They are sealed in an empty Pringles can, in a trap door under one of three litterboxes.
