Giving a whole new meaning to syntax


The poet for the inaugeration is Richard Blanco.


Blanco's books include Looking for The Gulf Motel (University of Pittsburgh Press), Directions to the Beach of the Dead (University of Arizona Press) and City of a Hundred Fires (University of Pittsburgh Press)

You can damn well bet I just ordered all of them.  I would like to be completely prepared for a substantive conversation should the poet ever need to practice his syntax.

    Ladies: We must weep, for he is gay. That said, he's a WONDERFUL poet. NPR featured him reading this stanza from his poem "America" yesterday:

    A week before Thanksgiving
    I explained to my abuelita
    about the Indians and the Mayflower,
    how Lincoln set the slaves free;
    I explained to my parents about
    the purple mountain's majesty,
    "one if by land, two if by sea"
    the cherry tree, the tea party,
    the amber waves of grain,
    the "masses yearning to be free"
    liberty and justice for all, until
    finally they agreed:
    this Thanksgiving we would have turkey,
    as well as pork.

    Nothing wrong with women appreciating the beauty of a gay man. From his poetry, it appears his beauty is not skin deep.

    I'm sure on Inaugration Day he'll do all of his communities proud - Latino, gay and rural Maine.
