Grand Hyatt 3--Janet 0

I'm not sure what it is about the Grand Hyatt in New York City, but I seem to lose stuff there. At the Edgars I lost my red feather boa. Sixteen minutes on hold with housekeeping, three calls to various lost and found wranglers all to no avail.

This weekend at Thrillerfest I lost two brand new hardcover books I'd just bought at Mysterious Bookshop. I know I had them in the bar. I didn't have them when I got home.

I'm going to have to start bringing an intern with me to parties just to make sure I get home with my shoes next time.

And the really snarly part is I was really looking forward to reading Brett Battles new book this morning. Phooey!

  1. Brett's book is great. His next one is really great too! But you'll hafta wait for that one!

  2. I, too, have lost a red feather boa at the Grand Hyatt.

  3. The books, sadly, are likely stolen or otherwise made-off-with.

The feather boa on the other hand... I don't wish to cause tension in your office, but have you considered the possibility that your boa has left you for your slithery assistant and they're just afraid to tell you?

  4. First question a good detective ask himself... what's the common denominator at the Grand Hyatt, hmmm.

    BAR!!!

Okay, what happens at bars... people tend to get friendly... and, (the longer they stay), forgetfully oblivious.

Maybe I could write in this genre?

    Haste yee back ;-)

  7. Are you sire it's not really Glen Livet 3- Janet Reid 0?

Or, depending on your perspective, you count of Glen Livets may be higher.

On father's day I went boating with Captain Morgan's. I returned home without my memory.

  8. Sophie has them! She just figured out they're yours.

    Red feather boa?

  9. Hmmmmmm

This tends to lend credence to that rumour a while back about your 'missing' blog having turned-up in a longshoremen's bar on the Brooklyn waterfront, apparently jettisoned there during a marathon dive-crawl.

Remember, you can replace boas, books, and fukmee pumps, but permanently lose an intern during a Johnny Walker Black-out and questions get asked, things get messy.

  10. My loss count at the Grand Hyatt totals one pair of brand new jeans, and one pair of well-worn, but still spiffy high-heeled black boots - on two different occasions. Hmmm. This is NOT what I wanted to have in common with you, Janet.

  11. Jeez, and I thought my best experience at the Hyatt Grand was sneaking a smoke with Lee Child on the loading dock. I think we might have seen your boa drifting down 42nd, but ask me no questions, tell me no lies.

  12. You're not alone when it comes to traveling woes, Ms. Reid. The tail end of my most recent interstate work trip was a trifecta of craptitude.

    1) Lost luggage at airport.

OK, I can deal with that. My important stuff was in the carry-on anyway. But then...

    2) The rear right tire of my car rusted into immobility, having been parked at the airport for four days in the rain. After removing said tire and DW40-ing the hell out of it, the thing starts working again.

    All is well until...

    3) I drive home in pouring rain only to have my windshield wiper break off. At two hours past sunset.

  13. I think there's a song about that scenario... something along the lines of "Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off"

  14. Laurel - that was funny. Actually all the comments are funny.

I now have been struck with two deep yearnigs: I want an intern I can bring with me places. Where do I get one of those?

And I also want a red feather boa, and I don't know where to get one of those either.

  15. Ben, all you need to complete the tale is your mama and a train.

    Hope this week is better!

  16. I lost my mind one week at the Grand Hyatt, Park Place. I still shudder at the thought of the gazillion tap-dancing teen convention, which converged. My very own, 'good morning, Sushine,' jack hammar wake up call.

  17. Making your own Boa...

Boas are primarily made of maribou feathers, you can find them in most fly fishing shops, any color. We use 'em to tie a variety of flies.

    Haste yee back ;-)

  22. Sophie Littlefield not only saves coveted books from a fate worse than unread, but she writes bad-assed fiction and can make a corked bottle of wine throw up it's arms in surrender with a key and a look.

It's awe-inspiring. In the good way.
