Breaking News-I've stopped stalking Jack Reacher

The reason was announced on Publishers Marketplace today:

Younger brother of Lee Child, Andrew Grant's debut EVEN, introducing David Trevellyan, described as Jack Reacher's younger brother if Reacher had a brother who'd joined the British Navy, and taken James Bond's career path, to Peter Wolverton at Thomas Dunne Books, in a significant deal, in a pre-empt, for publication in June 2009, by Janet Reid at FinePrint Literary Management (that would be me.)

  5. Oh, he does have a brother! How wonderful. May I ask what pre-empt means? Might be none 'o my business, but I'm just curious. And it might be a common term I've just missed along the way.

    Big, huge, ginormous congratulations.

  6. Yawn. Conway Sax could beat up Jack Reacher, his hypothetical brother, and any other hypothetical siblings he might have. And never break a sweat.

  7. There's no verb in that sentence.

  8. Conway Sax punched out all the verbs.

(OK, OK, somebody's a bit jealous over that six-figure advance!)

  10. May I ask what pre-empt means?

A pre-empt means the publisher tries to pre-emptively avoid the book going to auction by offering a good deal. Best definition I've ever seen is comparing it to the "Buy It Now" feature on an eBay auction.
