  1. Morning, Janet! Welcome anytime!
It doesn't look so pretty this morning, pouring rain and 40 degrees.

  2. Ha, I'm not far away. Be there by noon or after I walk the dog, do laundry, vacuum, wrap presents, go food shopping and get down a couple of thousand words. Keep the lights on.

  3. Oh, Sharyn, your home is breathtaking! Both the far off view and the nearby. And your house was handmade?! Inspiring! Thanks so much for sharing.

  4. Wow, just wow!

I checked out your Airbnb site, too. It looks SO amazing. I particularly love the photos with the snow outside the windows.
If I could, I'd book a holiday there. But it's a bit too far away for me.

    Thanks for sharing!

  7. If any of you get serious about coming write to me personally, not through Airbnb. There is always a friends/family/writers discount. And there is off season to boot.

Janet, can pick you up in Portland Maine, or Manchester, NH. If you bring the Duchess I will roll out the red carpet. Fancy Feast ok?

We built the red house for 10,000 and moved in. Went right down to the local vet and rescued a kitten. It was so cold the first winter it water bowl would freeze overnight. But it was our house and we were gonna live in it.

Now, there's two cats in the yard...

  9. As someone who exists on a steady diet of crumbling bricks, cracked concrete, and, for dessert, the odd whiff of sulfurous fumes emitted from sputtering exhaust pipes, this is just stunningly stunning.

As Mrs. Casual and I find ourselves in the middle of our annual Christmas music-video shoot, and the old computer stubbornly refuses to cooperate because, as he puts it: "Jus' ain't 'nuff RAM in me, bruh!" stress levels run high.

Oh, how wonderful it would be to simple look out the window, see those mountains, those trees, this sea of colors and shapes, lean back and whisper to no one in particular: "I think I'll just have another bourbon."

...And then order that extra RAM from B&H."

  10. Very nice. I head up to North Conway sometimes. Will have to mentally bookmark in case I can ever get a sitter to leave the kids behind for a few days!

  11. Wow, beautiful! And 40 degrees and pouring rain sounds even more perfect.

Lovely pics on the website too, Sharyn.

  13. It's gorgeous, Sharyn! Someday hubby and I will be taking a trip to see the eastern part of this beautiful country and we might just have to spend a night or two with you.

  14. Sharyn, all of the superlatives used already and more. We were there in the mid-eighties for a week-long conference. I'm a big fan of the Mountain Washington weather observation team. Thanks for sharing.

  15. Steve, you would be very welcome! Another Reider owns a house on the other end of our road and we met up when she was here and keep in touch.

The back yard only looks like that on a perfect day in October. Today you can't see a thing and there is no snow on the ground. Just rain and fog.

  16. I'm late to the comment party... but Sharyn, you already know how much I love your house, the views and surrounding landscape. I didn't know you had an AirBnB rental. What fun.

We're considering converting a section of the barn into a rental here at the sanctuary. Can't seem to take the plunge. It was inspiring to look at the link to your place.

  17. Yes, indeed, it is "a very, very, very fine house . . . " Thank you (and your two cats) for the CSNY ear-worm, Sharyn. :)

What a spectacular view. Can't imagine seeing that every day. And today's rain and fog sound perfect for writing.

When my daughter lived in Boston, she decided to try to hike all the White Mountains 40ks. She didn't get to all of them -- only lived there three years -- but made pretty good progress considering how the weather limited hiking weather. The pics she sent from various summits were breathtaking. I'll send her the link to your BnB.

  18. Oh, that's gorgeous, Sharyn. I'm not sure I'd get any writing done ever, though. I'd spend my whole time just looking at that view!

  19. Melanie, I was going to suggest you look into Harvest Hosts and also HipCamp. With all your land (and the horses to look at) you could bring in extra income letting people camp. Especially if you can set up water and maybe electricity, though some places don't offer that. Harvest Hosts are places that let people camp in RV's (just a small number). Harvest Hosts don't charge but they suggest people donate or buy something from the farms. HipCamp.com you do charge people.

I'd pay to camp in my RV (which I don't have yet) and be able to see horses running free! And if you have a waterfront spot even better.

The Airbnb brings in enough with the apartment on the second floor to help support us and the property while we look after the 91 year olds on the first floor.

KD, I've done a lot of hiking here too!

  20. Your place looks really lovely, Sharyn! I've bookmarked it for future travels. It would be a wonderful writing retreat!
