Kitten emergency!

Last year, I sent you a picture of two frightened kittens, smooshed together under a shelf. I now write to you with one little kitto smooshed up against my face.

Phone typing in bed is rather challenging these days.

Back in January, I finally got to bring them home.

It took them hours to come out on their own, and I was certain I wouldn’t see them for days. Still only six months old, they could fit just about anywhere, and I gave them the run of the place.

But lo and behold, the very next day,

a couple of kittens sat together atop their tree.

They got braver over the next few weeks. Black and white Miu could always be coaxed out with treats, and I used the distraction to get her more used to my touch. Meanwhile, Aki the tabby loved to play more than she was wary of me. But no touchy.

And all the while, they curled up on my feet at night.

Our friendship had a small setback when I needed to pack them up for a visit to the vet. They both may be girls, but I’m a responsible pet owner who gets my animals fixed.
For a few hours, it seemed like I had to start all over. But then, a miracle:

Even Aki, who isn’t much of a people cuddler. This was when my kittens became my kittos.

These days, Miu is an aggressive cuddler who sucks on her paw and has the loudest purr in the East. Aki is an Independent Kitto, Thank You So Much, but she likes to rub herself on my hand and nap nearby but not IN my lap. She doesn’t need me THAT much.
Currently, this is the kind of thing I deal with from my kittos on a daily basis:

They live happy, fulfilled lives full of treats, pets, and zoomies. And wrestling. Lots of wrestling.

  3. Those are some Very Good Cats you have there!

My cat, Ripple (now, sadly, long departed) wasn't really a lap cat. He cuddled with me pretty regularly, but if he was going to sit on my dad's lap? There needed to be a protective layer of today's newspaper there!

  6. Cute! At our house, we are totally owned by Tigger (ex-feral kitten who climbed up Hubby's pantleg at an event he was running sound for), Petey (inherited from my mother-in-law when she passed away), and Smokey (ex-feral kitten who accosted my son when he was running in the park and demanded to be taken in from the rain).

  9. Back in the late 80s, a little black kitten was tossed out of a car in front of our home. It ran under our porch and could not be coaxed out with tuna fish or milk. It was almost Halloween, and stray black cats do not fare well that time of year. Our neighbors’ name was Crane, so I tried to get them to adopt it. With a name like Crane, you could name it Ichabod, I said. But that didn’t sway them even an inch. Our cat would not tolerate another cat, they said. I reminded them we also had a cat, a Maine Coon named DiDi who was not the sociable type. They just shook their heads no and that was that. So I told DiDi she had better be nice to little Ichabod. He hid behind the radiator in the back room and gradually emerged over several days. DiDi tried to pick fights with Ichabod, and he fought back. He lived to be nearly 20 years old, the last three with diabetes. DiDi lived to be 20 as well. She was a fighter to her last breath.

  12. I watched the salad video there on Facebook. That tiny mew at the very end, after she gets to actually sniff the bit of greens, it can mean nothing other than, "you have failed me again, but I am used to this."

  14. Loudest purr in the East? Our Troubled boy can out-purr any cat.

Nice to see other people shanghaied by cats.

    Y'all have a great weekend

  15. They're gorgeous! But I wonder what they're saying about their adopted tame human in the cat-cyberverse?

    Dogs come when they're called.
A cat will take a message and get back to you.

  16. What a lovely story. It would seem Reiders are as much pet lovers as they are writers =)
