This is Ginger and her colt, Spur.
Ginger was confiscated by law enforcement from an abusive situation in 2007. She was placed in our custody, but she was in a large city over three hours away. While we made plans for transport, Ginger was taken to an animal control facility whose focus was cats and dogs, and they weren't set up for horses.
The director realized that Ginger had been bred and was very close to giving birth. A little too close, in fact. We weren't able to get her moved to the sanctuary before she delivered. Spur was born in a dog pen. The third photo is a recent photo of Spur. He's 11 years old now. Sadly, Ginger passed away last year. She had ten years of peace and freedom at the sanctuary.
JR: I'm always a little teary-eyed at these stories, and so grateful for the work Melanie and her cohort of angels do for these animals.

This is the perfect ending. Thank you, Melanie, for the work you do at Proud Spirit. The pictures of Ginger and Spur are beautiful. I'm so glad Ginger had ten good years with you. Spur is my favorite kind of horse - the happy kind. Love those polka dots.

ReplyDeleteI love spotty horses! Poor Ginger :( I'm happy for her ten good years, and I'm so glad that Spur was born in better circumstances. I just can't understand the mistreatment of animals. Cannot.

ReplyDeleteJanet, Thank you for all you do. I sure appreciate you sharing the website. We just took in three emaciated mares and a pony. The pony was removed from a bad situation and arrived at the sanctuary on Christmas day. We named her Noel. She's so stinkin' cute.
I so enjoyed seeing everyone's precious pets. I'm also looking forward to the blog resuming. As Hank says, "Cheers!"

ReplyDeleteI've very much enjoyed the Pet Parade. Thanks, everyone, for sharing. I realized the other day, it's not just seeing the adorable/unusual animals or hearing about the rescues and fosters and pet sitting. Although all that is quite satisfying. So admirable. It's also knowing it goes both ways and that all of you fellow Reiders -- who are among my favourite people on the internet -- benefit from the unconditional love of having these critters in your life. OK, I'm not sure turtles and crabs and lizards do the unconditional love thing. Or cats either, now that I think about it. But they all do enrich and lighten the lives of you remarkable people who care for them. And that's been an immensely comforting feeling these past few weeks.
