So, about that guy with the toilet seat on his head?

People come to BEA to get attention.

There are a lot of ways to do it:

Wear a lime on your head

Have cute girls in bikinis playing guitars in your booth

dress up like a rodent

Offers of all sorts of entertaining pasttimes

Is any of this effective?
Probably not given I don't recall a single book or product offered by any of these folks. On the other hand, it's hard to not love someone wearing this on her head:

  1. That hat is amazing. I got the balloon animal guy to make me a dog but I didn't think to have it a HAT and a DOG. That's an amazing work of genius right there.

  2. Is it just me or do the reindeer's antlers look like...?

    Nevermind. It's probably just me.

  3. I heard a post-BEA rumor about a certain high-vis lit agent's missing blog having been found (days later)wedged behind the bench in the back booth of a longshoreman's dive on the waterfront of East New York.

Anybody else hear anything about this?

  5. Wow. I got to go to BEA last year (yay for working in a library near the convention center!), and if those pictures are indicative of the whole thing, it really is a change. Last year I was swimming in books after walking ten feet. I think there are still some I haven't read! (Of course, the fact that I kept buying books didn't help, just made my TBR pile even bigger.)

  6. Hey, who's that handsome male model you got there? Is that the ever-brilliant writer Adam Eisenberg, author of A Different Shade of Blue?

    Why, yes...yes it is.

  7. Interesting stuff. I've always wanted to go to BEA, but not sure what I expect to find there.

I hope they still have it by the time I get there. It looks like I might only see a different version of it. (No telling: the pendulum may swing back, but I'm betting against it.)

Meanwhile, thanks for posting my book COLUMBINE there with a pic under "Recent Reads." I appreciate it. (And aren't google alerts wonderful? LOL.)

It caused me to read your other posts on BEA, though, which were illuminating. Part of me feels like feeling sad about the drastic change, but mostly it feels good to see the industry reacting to the realities. For my book, I think I'd rather see them spend the money on some web marketing than a sliver of the cost of an expensive booth there.

Reading back through the blog also led my to your really kind review of my book, which I somehow missed before. Thanks. It means a lot when people who really know/love books say things like that.
