ReplyDeleteAstroturf keeps them in their tanks. Otherwise the octopi like to wander. Fabulous creatures though, you're very lucky to have one as an assistant.

ReplyDeleteI was sad about the octagal they mentioned - Octavia - who died when she drained her tank in a similar manner. Flo's lucky they found her before that happened to her.
ReplyDeleteMaybe if they gave these critters jobs, they wouldn't just play around and take stuff apart when bored. Like border collies. If they don't have a job to do, they can go nuts.
I wonder if octopi would find those wood bead and wire toys you finding in kids' waiting areas of any interest.

ReplyDeleteBJ- some of the better aquariums are in the habit of giving octopuses toys. Containers with treats, rubiks cubes, all sorts of fun things. They're very smart, very curious, and really aren't aware of the danger they could be in. Like a genius 3 year old.

Flo seems to get into as much trouble as my two, teenage boys - undoubtedly with a lot more intention and planning!

ReplyDeleteI got that from the article. I'm glad some folks give them things to play with. Maybe they should hire an octopus nanny, to watch them at night? Even a 24 hr security company with cameras. Flo seems to have come very close to repeating Octavia's tragedy.
Sorry to be a downer. Can you tell I worry about silly things sometimes?
