ReplyDeleteMy parents live in New Bruswick--which is Nova Scotia's neighboring province. They bought a house at that size for less than $100k. They don't have the view, but they have five acres.
ReplyDeleteHere in Saskatchewan, $300k would get you a nice house, but not as nice as that one...depending on where you go of course. In the city or suburbs, you'll pay more than in the country.

Though, this is the upper end of property prices in NS.
I grew up in Cape Breton (near this property) and it's my dream to buy a summer home there(though it sounds better when I call it my writer's retreat, heehee).
The place I've had my eye on just went up for sale and it's only 1/6 of the price of this one.
Though I still can't afford it. Wah!
Having housesat in Nova Scotia for five years (Lunenburg area), I can tell you the province is beautiful. And the people, amazing!

ReplyDeleteI'm in western BC and for that price you can get a thousand square foot house on half an acre...maybe...if you're really lucky...But I wouldn't trade my small house on half an acre for anything. I love it here!

We went through St. Margaret's Bay this August on the Cabot trail. If I'd seen the house, I would have made an offer on the spot. Gorgeous landscape, wonderful people, and the beach is close by! What more do you need?
ReplyDeleteJanet, did you ever try the Lunenburg County Winery fruit wines while you were there? We brought over a case home with us, and will be so happy next year when they become available in Ontario.

ReplyDeleteHeidi- DH and I talked, we'd rather live in Florida. It says something about my dedication to avoid cold that I'd rather have hurricanes every year than move north of Dallas.
During the winter, you simply don a cozy sweater, build up the fire in the fireplace and curl up to read a book. Or watch hockey on the big screen TV with surround sound.
ReplyDeleteMy mom rents the lower floor of a Victorian house with a wrap around porch and a view of Saint John Harbour (New Brunswick). All for $400 a month. Many of the grand Saratoga-like homes on her street go for about $200,000. A steal since my 3-bedroom bungalow here in Ontario is assessed at $350K.
Janet, I missed the ending of your roast 'cause I worked late. Hope you had a great time and got the sushi out of your hair.
Chumplet: Low rent is one of the things I miss about Saint John, I lived in the South end (not far from the Giant Tiger), in a gorgeous little appartment. $500/month for three bedrooms. I moved to Regina where I'd be lucky to get a studio apartment for that price. Unless, of course, I want to move to 'the Hood'...

I grew up about 30 minutes from Boutlier's Point, and the whole area is beautiful. The people are very friendly and welcoming, as well. One tip: visit in the summer!

ReplyDeletea lot of the Nova Scotia wineries are exporting into Ontario (selling through the LCBO) within the next year. This still didn't stop us from loading the car up just in case... Stutz Cider is a delight I am also looking forward to- best cider I've tasted outside of northern France.
Aimless writer: we are in the midst of an election here too. If the Conservatives win, we are considering moving down south (my husband is from the US!) after an Obama victory, of course...
