They look so cute and curious.

RachelErin - My version of balancing work on contests with my WIP involves ditching the contests. I know they're good for my writing but I barely have time to work on my WIP as it is. I feel I need to focus my energy and passion on my book until it's finished. Maybe then I'll do some contests before starting a new novel. Good on you for doing both. I'm sure it's hugely beneficial.

MA Hudsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11055543285024785889noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17040756.post-40557644664656995192016-08-24T22:39:48.022-04:002016-08-24T22:39:48.022-04:00Wow, I can't imagine having four cats. Congratulations to the OP on the contest and I wish you the very best of luck.

It's certainly not small potatoes. My former editor used to make very good money writing stories for magazines, changing them up a bit and reselling them to other magazines. She packed into the mountains in Idaho and Montana one year following a wild horse herd and wrote stories about them. People in Europe ate them up. It was a wild departure for a woman who had been editing architectural magazine in Palm Springs, but something she felt driven to do.

Anyway, don't discount what a person can do with freelance writing.

julieweathershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10198357981793324007noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17040756.post-30087175732663512302016-08-24T10:25:15.740-04:002016-08-24T10:25:15.740-04:00These 3 are beauties, Opie. When I first started they helped my articles a lot (in a 500 word science story, you get about 100-150 words for narrative, and the rest for facts/quotes, although there is some overlap. Writing the 'story' first made mine more interesting.

I've slacked off on them though, because I don't do much writing on the weekends (I write during my commute, lunch break, and an extra half hour before I go home). And because I feel guilty when not editing my WIP every second I am writing.

How do the rest of you handle that - balancing writing contests and/or blog posts while working on longer projects?

And I love the picture. My youngest just turned two, so I don't have a baby around the house right now, and I've been craving pets (those two facts are connected in my mind, somehow).
