Ninja!

Ninja!

Meet Ninja*, aka VelcroCat. (Guess why.)

She was* a street cat who adopted our family during some very sad times — she wandered up to a crowd of us in the yard and allowed us to hold and cuddle her until she was done. Which she demonstrated by means of a triple backflip. After that she stayed around, well and truly a house-bound cat, barring those moments when she would bolt for an open door in the twilight.

She had her hideout under the shed, where she generally held out until breakfast time.

*Ninja has sadly moved on to her next life after a brief illness. A memorial cairn now stands beside her shed, the rocks piled up in such a way that the corner of my eye is certain, every time, that I just saw movement....

It's funny the spots that cats and dogs deem worthy for their remembrances. Skye choose a patch of chocolate lilies (Fritillaria biflora) in our lower south prairie. Ziggy chose a spot on one of our round balls of hay, and Holly sits between two cherry trees in our front yard. Maybe they dwell there when they check in on us, but I know those are the spots when I pass I feel them most.

Enjoy this day with those still here. Cheers, Hank.

Sometimes, you have no choice because the animal has chosen you to belong to them. I'm sorry Ninja has moved on, but it sounds like you were truly blessed for the time she graced you.

I don't think our animal companions really die. They are always somewhere where they used to be. Resting or hiding, waiting for us to find them. They are there still. I know mine are.

Like, Kate, I've always had a soft spot for Russian Blue-type cats. Thank you for sharing Ninja. I'm sure she's out there somewhere, tiptoeing through the twilight on velvet paws.

I love the name and how (I'm guessing) she got it. It looks like she was one happy gal.
