Promotion ideas

Authors should always be on the hunt for innovative ways to promote their books.
My strategy for success is to steal ideas I think are very cool.

Here's the latest:

The white card in the bottom right corner says "Scenes from BEAUTIFUL LIES take place here"

And of course, you could have variations:

"This is where I wrote this book"

"This is where I banished my spouse while I wrote this book"

"This place is where I got the idea of how to kill the bad guy"

"My agent brought me here to sign my publishing contract, and drank so much they threw her out on the street!"

The idea of course is to reach people who might not hear about your book in reviews, blogs or at the library. Local folks just walking by or coming to the restaurant/cafe/distillery.

Brilliant! My friend told me today she's going to take me out to lunch while wearing a shirt that says, "I'm with the Author." A little different, but in the same vein I think.

Is that a copy of the book, or a promo poster? Which would be easier to surreptitiously plant... er, convince proprietors to place in their businesses?

Clever.

Nancy Kelley, that's pretty cool. I might use that - I'm with the healer ;)

I have a tee shirt that has written on it, "Ask me about my book".

Cool idea! Now I just need someone to pay my way to various spots in the Caribbean so I can tack those little signs up in all the places that inspired scenes in MAKING WAVES. Or maybe someone could just buy me a yacht?

Clever local marketing. I wonder if I can expense that trip to Shibuya for my WIP.

I would definitely be more interested in a book if I saw this kind of marketing. The only thing I can think to add is to make sure you have permission from whoever owns the space so your sign doesn't get thrown out!

Yes, this was not intended to be done without the cafe's permission!

I love this idea! Totally stealing it someday when I have a book to promote.

Plus, as a reader, it would make my day to see something like that in a place I frequent.

Oh, that's clever. (Of course, my whole book takes place in the three bears' house, so the T-shirt idea might work better for me :)
