What's missing on this list?--contest closed/winner picked!

Warren Richey's book about paddling around Florida in a kayak for The Ultimate Florida Challenge is hilarious, and has drawn quite a bit of interest from the denizens of The Reef.

It's also gotten interest from the nice folks at Florida Rambler who asked Warren to list what he packs for a kayak trip.  His list is in the article.

I've read Warren's book more than once and yet, this article was the first time I realized there's something missing from the list.

What is it?

First person to guess correctly (sole judge of what's correct = me) wins a copy of WITHOUT A PADDLE by Warren Richey.

**WINNER CHOSEN

of course I thought of "something to read" and Jaymg guessed that right off the bat at 8:35am.  There's one winner.  (Jaymg, send me your mailing address and we'll be happy to send you copy of the book)

Then I read the rest of the comments, and howled!

Delilah, the unruly helpmeet (which has to be one of the best names ever) weighed in with Underpants and shark repellent.

I can't believe I didn't think of those!  Clearly a winner.

Delilah send me your mailing address, and we'll send you a copy of the book as well.

Thanks for a great start to the morning!

Underpants.

And shark repellent.

I'd bring a note pad and a pen or two. But then I have a very nosy mom who wants to know everything and writing it down is so much easier than repeating the same story over and over again...

A notebook or journal! Otherwise how is he supposed to write a book about the experience!

Something to read?

Books?

He is missing a few things by my standards, but the biggie is that he is missing something to read...no books, magazines or kindle-like apparatus. The other biggie is chocolate or sweets. Lastly there is no reservations for a four or five star hotel!

A book to read by the campfire.

It's obvious, the product no sane kayaker would leave home without. Snarky Snark's highest selling product:Shark Repellent.

...shark repellant...and spare ass (for inevitable attack).

May I have four guesses?

Toothbrush and biodegradable toothpaste.

A towel.

Something to read besides nautical charts (maybe this is just me)

A small photo of his beloved agent in a waterproof frame.

I'm seeing undergarments and a toothbrush missing.

oh, do'oh. Shoes! Unless he wears crocs the whole time. That might make portaging a bit of an adventure though.

Well, I thought it was weird that he specified reading glasses but not book(s), map(s), or GPS unit.

Books to read?

P.S. Well, I guess "nautical charts" qualify as maps. And the note following the list mentions that he brings a GPS unit on major trips.

But going without any books???

How about a camera? I know I'd like to take pictures on a trip like that.

Ooh, ooh! A fifth of Jack! Ice-nine? A copy of GHOST COUNTRY?

I'd say a water purification / desalination kit. And so it goes.

A good book and a bigger boat.

Possible his phone has Kindle for Android (mine does) and a camera. He's still missing chocolate/sweets though as there's still not an iChocolate app, mores the pity!

A supply of fresh drinking water.

A map?

He has a compass but no map.

Obviously, he forgot his cell phone charger. I don't know how long his battery life is, but mine wouldn't make it. Clearly, he has skills. Maybe he could hook it up to a lightning storm or something.

Also, a gun. I've seen Crocodile Dundee. Those things will eat your face off.

No mention of chocolate (shudders)

Shoes. I didn't see any shoes on the list.

I agree with the people who have suggested drinking water, or if not that, then at least water purification tablets.

He remembered the reading glasses but not the reading material. Unless he wants to look at blades of grass real close-like, I would say a book is missing.
