the assssistant gets a hold of some new reading material

Tonight was the launch party for In the Shadow of the Master, an anthology of some fairly new and unknown writers that might make it big one day. Remember you heard these names here first: Nelson DeMille, Jeffery Deaver, Tess Gerritsen, Sue Grafton, Laura Lippman, Lisa Scottoline, and some guy who mentioned giving up writing to be a rock and roll star, I think his name was King, something.

Anyway, these guys got corralled by a guy named Michael Connelly and they all wrote stories honoring Edgar Allan Poe.

It was a wonderful party at Otto Penzler's Mysterious Bookshop, made all the better by runnning into Sarah Weinman and other shy woodland creature reviewers.

The asssssistant slithered out of her comfy inbasket to take a look at the book

Just read my first Gerritsen book...THE SURGEON...will be writing about it for my book recommendation column for the Colorado Springs Gazette...feeling even better recommending it, since you're a Gerritsen fan. Am still looking under the crack of my bedroom door, before opening, thanks to the book.

It's always remarkable to think back to the days when these authors that we now know so well were just getting their start and had no idea that they would be so big....how wonderful that ride must be!

Looks like a great collection.

Are you going to be at any conferences in 2009?

I'm brave enough, I'm smart enough and, gosh darnit, people like me. Sorry, I couldn't resist based on your comment about people brave enough to admit they read your blog. Anyway, I've named it one of my favorites over on my blog: http://varkat.livejournal.com/57004.html.

Happy New Year! Hope we bump into each other again in 2009.

What a fun idea for an anthology! Who doesn't like a little Poe? Or a cuddly snake?

(Can I use Kindle as a verb like that? Yes, I'm still Kindle-goofy. :-)

Now I've got a bug in my bonnet so to say, to pick up the book when it's available. I'm a huge Edgar Allen Poe fan. What can I say his writing has always had a depth, that was before his time. I used to read the "Raven" to my daughter as a bedtime story. To this day, I believe she could quote it word for word. (Hugs)Indigo

Do you kindle? Are you kindling now? Who coined the name Kindle for that Amazon.com device? Jeff Betros or who? And how did he come up with the word?

Are You Kindling? "To kindle" is now a verb!
Are You Kindling? "To kindle" is now a verb!

Examples:

"I'm kindling now, call you back in ten minutes."

"I'm kindling the newspaper now, can't chat, will return call in one hour."

"Do you enjoy kindling with your Kindle?" "Yes, I do enjoy kindling. It's easy on my eyes and the text is very easy to read. Almost like print. Not quite, but getting closer bit by bit. I love my Kindle, and all I do now is kindle, kindle, kindle."

"Hey, I've been kindled. My lates book was packaged by Kindle as a Kindle book. It feels kind of good to be kindled."

"My book was out of print for a long time, but a new publisher reprinted it and put it on the Kindle menu and you could say my book has been rekindled. I love it!"

When I told a top tech reporter at the NY Times about the discussion
here on my blog and elsewhere -- about KINDLE as a verb -- he wrote back in Internet time:

Dear Danny

"wow... THAT didn't take long! :) "
