Friday night cruising around the internet

I'm nosy. I'm always looking around at websites of commenters on this and other blogs I keep. I like to do it cause it feels as if I'm wandering around a fabulous treasure trove with less dust and fewer opportunities to break china.

So, I'm slinking around tonight and I happen upon illustrator Bonnie Adamson's site.

And I love this

And this

And I wish I knew more about kids' book illustrators than "I love these" but I don't so I just have to be a delighted consumer instead of an agent.

One of the best things about having kids? Lots of great books with awesome illustrations! It opened a whole new world to me!

I can't write 'em, but I love reading them!

Oh my, those are nice.

Like you, I'm not a regular reader of children's picture books. (Eh? "Reader"/"picture books"?) This has changed in the last few months, since discovering a blog called Seven Impossible Things Before Breakfast. They feature (among other wonderful unexpected content), every week, the work of a different illustrator. The one post of that sort I keep recommending to people is their "visit with Ursula Vernon." (At the artist's site, which they link to, you'll find that the work they've selected barely scratches the surface.)

(I've got no affiliation with 7-Imp, as they call themselves for short, or with Ms. Vernon, other than as a highly satisfied, er, consumer.)

I visited her site---beautiful illustrations!!!
I miss reading the picture books to my kids. I wish middle grade books allowed for more illustrations because I think they really contribute to the text.

I love the whistling dog.

I really like that first one too. I can almost hear that dog whistling, Sittin' On The Dock of The Bay.

I'm sure others imagine a different tune, but what do I car what they imagine.

I like to nose around on the commenters sights too. And like these illustrations, I'm always amazed at what really good "stuff" is out there. I found an unpublished writer about three years ago and now I'm addicted to his work. Which happens to be YA, and it's not even my thing. But it's good.

What vibrant, detailed work! My daughter, although 19, still buys many children's books just for the illustrations.

My work consists mostly of animal watercolours, but I once did an acrylic similar to the second painting called Jungle Jam. My son poked the canvas with push pins when he was little. Grrr.

Thank you, Janet--I've died and gone to heaven!

I have a child's book I’ve never submitted to anyone because I’m no sort of artist and do not know how to go about having it illustrated.

These are beautiful and fun. I love the copper plate illustrations of the late 19th century and the richly coloured illustrations of the 20s and 30s of the last century.

These are so much fun. Did everyone see the illustration with Janet's assistant?

I wrote some children's books years ago. Gerald Holmes illustrated one for me with some wonderful watercolors. Gerald did the illustrations for the HANK THE COWDOG books.

I really should revive the books. The illustrations are too fun not to use.

I have so much respect for these illustrators. It's truly a gift.

they're making a movie based on 'where the wild things are.' That's one of my most favourite children's illustrated books.

Really?! A movie? Say it's not just a rumor. Say it...

These are gorgeous. Just gorgeous.

Like Chumplet's daughter (though, okay, I'm not exactly 19 anymore-thank gawd) I still buy myself children's books for the illustrations. A few months ago I went to a Tomie dePaola signing and fine, I was the only adult there squealing over him. And okay. The only adult running around, waving their book in the air, and shooting to everyone, "Look! Tomie signed it to me!" But whatever. It was Tomie dePaola.

I love the alligator...

I'm back ... How unusual for me.

One of my favorite illustraters is Cicely Mary Baker. I have the full set of her Fairy illustrations ...

You should see them all. Online you can see the front covers of the books at:

Pixies just can't spell illustrators. That's probably because we learn spelling from goats.
