get your OWN email address

If you're querying electronically, do yourself a big favor and get an email address that's yours and yours only. Not you and your spouse's, not your newest honeypie's, and certainly not the host's of the house where you're staying.

You want a web based email address like hotmail, yahoo, or gmail. There are others too, but these are the ones I know best.

It's very perplexing when I get an email from "Sally Smith" and it's signed "Joe Frankenstine."

Also, if you and your spousal unit, your latest honey pie or the lodge owner part company you'll lose access to this email address.

Be smart. Be yourself. I know your Mom told you that before the high school formal, but it's still damn good advice.

I have a personal email and a business email, one that is identifiable as me - on gmail. I think it might be good advise also to use your name, or your book title, not something cutesy or obscure. But that's just my opinion.

Might also a good idea not to use an email account provided by your employer - unless there are no policies against personal use and you're sure you'll be with that employer for some time to come.

This is such a good point. I can't understand why women (it's *always* women) who use an email address they share with their husbands that has their husband's name on it!

I know better than to use the goofy email address connected to my blog for queries, but it didn't occur to me that our shared blog address might cause confusion. At least my real first name is on it.

Looks like it's time to consider a new gmail for agents only...

Wow... are there really people without their own email addresses?

I have two major emails... one for publishing stuff and one for pediatrician work/personal stuff.

But in total, I have at least half a dozen, plus one for my imaginary person who registers for spam-generating websites on my behalf.

My problem is remembering which of my 50+ email addresses I used...but then, I'm not querying. When I do I will likely use the real one and not the throwaways that get bombarded with spam.

I have three email accounts: one at work, one with my regular married name for family stuff, and another with my pen name. I create 'rules' to direct any email that involves writing, queries, editing, etc. to go into my "Writing" mailbox.

I try to keep it simple because e-mail is so important to me. I have one e-mail and I don't give my address out to anyone unless it's business or family or a handful of friends who are like family. And I'd never allow anyone else to use it.

Oh crap.

Hi Janet, this is Mr. Mags.

I realize now that you've probably thought this was Mags speaking to your blog all along. No, it's been me. Mr. Mags. Mags bothers the nice folks over at DarnThoseDarningNeedles.com (she's quite the enthusiast). I bother you. We have a system.

I suppose I should get my own Blogger now, too. Community property just ain't what it used to be. Ah well.

The things you learn on agents' blogs! That's just terriffic!
